babysitter meanwhile there are 17 spots taken by children whose parents don’t attend UPEI or did at one time but no longer do. So as more people graduate and the summers are open to outsiders for the summer and the falls until the children reach the age of six years old, the number of student’s children in the daycare lowers and the waiting list grows. So much for students first!

What can be done, well the current policy must be changed. Maybe to something like once you graduate the children have to leave the daycare to make room for other children whose parents are still attending UPEI. They might also do something like take children into the daycare for the summer only so the spaces will be available in the fall to students who desperately need the services of the daycare. The children taken out of the daycare could be put on a priority list with the children of students who have graduated being the first outsiders to fill the available spots.

We realize this is not the fault of the daycare or Student Services directly, but maybe the fact that there is no written policy helps to create these problems.

Student Killed At St. F.X. Was Drunk by Jeff Harrington (Atlantic Bureau)

Halifax (CUP) - A college student killed Sept. 29 was drunk when he stumbled and fell beneath a flatbed trailer, a judicial inquiry heard Oct. 29. in Antigonish, N.S.

Witness Jean Marc Marchand said Larry Sampson, 20, was carrying tow bottles just before he climbed aboard the trailer hauling a float in the homecoming parade at St. Francis Xavier University.

"He was drinking from one and giving the other away," said Marchand.

A second witness, John McKee, said one bottle contained a potent grain alcohol and the other a soft drink.

Marchand said Sampson, a second-year student at the University College of Cape Breton, had come to St. F.X. the night before the homecoming parage and football game. They went out drinking and continued drinking after they woke up the next morning.

McKee and another witness who was on the float, Brent Fraser, testified Sampson was intoxicated when he leapt off the float and tried to get back on.

They said Sampson seemed to stumble and grabbed at the edge of the float, but fell underneath it. He was crushed to death, suffering massive brain damage and numerous skull fractures.

The tragedy shocked the St. F.X. community, but the co- ordinator of the campus’ alcohol awareness group said trying to change students’ attitudes about drinking is "frustrating."

"My first reaction was ‘maybe people will smarten up,’ but nothing has changed," said Robin Stacey of the Committee on Responsible Consumption.

Stacey said students at St.F.X. and other universities have to realize they can have fun without drinking. But she said the media and peer pressure make it difficult to get the idea across, especially ata campus like St.F.X., where most first-year students live in residence.

"Drinking is part of residence. You don’t want to be the odd man out," said Stacey, who said she drinks herself, but "doesn’t get out of hand.”

Stacey said every residence has “its own thing when it comes to drinking"--from "champagne breakfasts without breakfast" to "mountain-climbing parties," where revellers start with beer on the ground floor and finish with shooters when and if they reach the

top.

Student council president John Ratchford agreed with Stacey, saying first-year students are “open to influences,” including pre- event "psych-ups": that invariably involve alcohol.

"I think the problem is the attitude that alcohol is a substance _ that helps you entertain yourself," he said.

Stacey said that even when students get poor marks, they put the blame on the professor or the course material rather than themselves.

"Nobody does any work until midterms because they're all out partying," she said. ‘

The university's administration is establishing a committee to respond to the issues raised by the accident. The judicial inquiry will resume December 6, when three more witnesses will testify.
