A perennial. it is found mainly in old pastures and in uncultivated areas such as along fences. The plant is tall (2-3 feet high) erect and leafy. Flowers are golden yellow and ap- pear at the top of the plant. The seeds are small and very numerous and easily spread by wind. Seeds are borne about midsummer and in the fall the plant forms I. dense low rosette which shows up as deep green clumps of leaves in fall months. The large plant chokes out many good species of plants and when it becomes numerous lowers greatly the yield of edible forage in the pasture. Cattle won't usually eat it but if on I poor pasture infested with ragwort they might and it could be the cause of a fatal liver disease in cattle. ,

Ragwort can be controlled by crop rotation, cutting of pastures and waste land and possibly by spraying with 2, 4-D. It seems reasonable that in permanentpas- turn the weed might be destroy- edbycuttlng the tops to prevent seed production and then applying 1 4-D to the low leaves to kill out the roots. Last fall, early in September in a pasture field near Charlottetown which was badly infested with ragwort a half acre was marked off and sprayed with 2, 4-D ester at the approximate rate of one quart per acre. This ester spray contained 64 ounces of pure 2, 4-D per gallon. Spray- ing was done with a hand spray- er and there was long grass in the pasture so the coverage would 310” bk 1007c. This field was ex- amined early in the spring and again recently and there arc only scattered ragwort plants in Ithe sprayed area, whereas, the un. Bimiyed section is again infested with the weed. This is only one area test and the evidence for that reason cannot be conclusive. However, it does seem to indic- ate that 2, 4-D can be a useful aid in the control of ragwort which is becoming a serious pest in this province.

Among the many potential sources of supply of organic mg. ierial which might be used to help in the restoration of the hu- mus content of our soils are the deposits of peat and muck or alder-mud occurring in the pro- vince. According to the soil sur- vey of the province there are ap- proximately BB00 acres of these or- ganic deposits. This figure how- ever may be taken as s. conser- vative estimate, there are probab- ly many acres of such deposits which were not reached during the soil survey.

While the application of such orglnlc materials as peat, alder- mud and muck is not a normal practice in this region such mater- ials have been used with satis- factory results in Europe and also in the United States and to some extent in Canada.

In considering the use of peat and muck deposits as soil amend- menis there are certain charac- teristics oi these materials which must be recognized. Although the organic matter and total nitro- gen content of these materials is high the available nitrogen con- tent is oomperatively low; in re- spect to the phosphoric acid and potash content also. peats and mucks are of negligible value. It will be necessary therefore to add nitrogen. phosphorous and pot- ash in the form of fertilizer ma- terials to insure a sufficient sup- ply to meet the needs of crop growth, and in the case of nitro- gen, to aid also in the decomposi- tion of the organic materials to form soil humus.

As most pest and muck de- posits are strongly acid in reac- tion it will also be necessary to apply lime when these materials are added to the land.

In general it is not advisable to apply peat and muck in the crude and raw condition. However, when these materials are com- posted with manure their value is increased as a result of the decomposition processes under- gone in composting. They also help to conserve the liquid part of the manure which might other- wise be lost. when composted with manure peat and muck in- crease the bulk of the good man- ure available which is a factor worth considering on farms where the manure supply is limited. Another manner in which peat especially could be utilized is in the stable gutters as an absor- bent, thus helping to conserve the liquid manure.

This year we are very fortun- ate in having a good price for eggs with little or no change in feed prices. This means that a farmer doing a poor Job of feed- ing and management can make a break with his eggs.

No consideration of the interests of children can overlook their enthusiasm for comics, the radio. and the movies. (sooner or later. television will add its particular problems). Are thue interests good? Are they bad? Does the good overbalance the bad? Whatever the score. they are here to stay and must be reckoned with.

Let us first examine the comics that certainly seem to be more bad than good. They really are not comics in the sense of being laughter-provoking material like the early comic ltrlps in the news- papers. In subject matter, most of them do not differ from other chil- dren's books. They contain adven- ture, fantasy, music, crime, West- erns, humor and nonsense, animal glories and stories about real peo- ple, and historical and current events. Unfortunately, too often, there are lurid crime and sex stories that attract older children. In quality, the comics rank all the way from such fine ones as "Terry and the Pirates." and "Lil Abner", to utter trash.

What is the hold of the comics on the average child? Perhaps the greatest. is that children love ac- tion, and there is never a dull moment. They also love repetition and the same theme and characters are repeated over and over. As in the beloved fairly tales also, the hero overcomes one difficulty after another: defeats the villain over and over, and in the end the good guy wins and the bad guy is pro- perly punished.

Another factor of importance in the popularity of the comics, is that it is so easy to get the story. Most of it is told through pic- tures, and the reading material requires no effort. To the many children who find reading hard. there is great satisfaction and sense of achievement in getting a story without stumbling through

This interest in crime and violence did not come in with the comics for detective story) or the radio or movies, either. Shapespeare. Homer, filled with it. And cherished fairy tales are not far behind!

Do comics, or similar stories of crime and violence over the radio. or in the movies, really provide a safe release for unsocial feelings. or can they lead to violent acts? There is no final answer, but men in a position to know whatever can be known, do not believe the latter.
