Soccer Panthers + off to Antigonish to win

Panthers capped off another successful season last week- end by ousting the Universite de Moncton Blue Eagles 11—2 in Atlantic University Athle— tic Association soccer action in Moncton. '

The Panthers finished the regular season in first place in the AUAA West Division with a record of 9 wins 0 losses and 3 ties extending their undefeated record to three consecutive seasons.

For the past two years the Panthers’ only losses have

come in the playoffs. Scott Neil scored five goals Sunday and tops all scorers in the AUAA with nineteen

goals this season.

Other scorers for the soccer Panthers were Dave MacRae with two goals; Richard Pierre-Gilles, Mitch Murphy, Don MacKenzie, and Alan Spinks each scored once.

The Panthers have scored 23 goals in the past three games of the regular season and have outscored their opponents in the AUAA 8-5 this season.

The Panthers are not lagging in defense as the

number of goals against indi-

cate their defensive might. They have two great goal keepers in Jean-Francois Painchaud and Trent Hayes.

Hayes has five shutouts on the season and has allowed only two goals past him.

Painchaud has allowed one more and both should be great candidates for All- Canadian, as well as the high scoring Scott Neil and about half of the Panther squad. and let us not forget the coach Gordie Wilson who has been described as one of the best soccer coaches in the province.

Athletes of the Week

Libby Baldwin is UPEl’s female athlete of the week. Libby scored one goal for the UPEI Lady Panthers field hockey team to give them a tie against St. FX on Friday.

It was their second tie, giving them two points for the season.

Even though the team failed to win a game this season we are sure they gave

it their best effort, and for that we are all proud of them. Congratulations, Libby, and good luck next year! Scott Neil led the UPEl soccer Panthers to win their last game of the regular season scoring an awesome five goals in and 11-2 defeat of the Moncton Blue Eagles. That makes 19 goals for Scott on the season with 12 of those coming in only 3 games.

Scott has definitely been a major factor in UPEl’s suc- cess this year as the Panthers went through another season posting an unbeaten record.

The Panthers travel to Antigonish this weekend for the AUAA playoffs, and we all wish you the best of luck.

Congratulations Scott on winning the athlete of the week title again, hope you have a good weekend.

The AUAA playoffs are scheduled for St. FX this weekend, where the top two teams from the west will be battling the top two teams from the east for the AUAA championship currently held by UPEI.

The Panthers seem to have the momentum and are the favourites going into the playoffs. They will be prac- ticing hard for the rest of the week, and it looks as if there will soon be another AUAA to title for the Soccer Panthers. They will face tough com- petition in the playoffs and they have to get their offen~ sive power going early and win each game at a time. It sounds like an old cliche but that is the road they have to take and they know from experience that even one goal can decide an entire season.

The only thing we can do is cross our fingers and hope.

The Panthermaniettes will be there to give some moral support to the Panthers squad. As well, the Student Union will be sending some

Fan Vans to St. FX for Saturday’s soccer game, and then to Halifax for a Panther hockey contest against Dal- housie Saturday night.

The van will stay Overnight at the luxurious Chateau Halifax and then return for the second game of the soccer

playoffs and the hockey game between St. FX and UPEI. It sounds like a good time — h0pefully, UPEl can come out of the weekend with four victories Good luck to both teams,

Field hockey season ends

The University of Prince Edward island Lady Panthers didn't manage to win a game this year but did. collect two ties and finished their AUAA season on little happier note than last season.

The Women’s field hockey team got one point in their 1-1 tie with St. Francis Xavier Friday but lost to Dalhousie University in Halifax Satur- day 3—0.

Libby Baldwin scored the lone goal for the Lady Panthers, who play a fairly good game but lack some offensive power some of the other teams in the AUAA possess.

and remember, SUPPORT PANTHER SPORTS. There are some good

quality players in the line-up and there are a few rookies lacking in experience in a very tough conference.

They have two points on the season, bettering their mark of last year of only one point.

The girls have to hang up their uniforms and look ahead to next year and hopefully a better perform- ance on the field.

1 don’t think it will take a lot of work. Congratulations on a very good year and remember, it’s not whether you win or lose, it’s how you play the game.
