we took the train to Lausanne. an hour's run. This city is built right on the side, of the mount- ains on the edge of Lac Lemon. and some of the streets seem to be built at above a forty-five degree angle. We found out, too late, that to convey people up and down these steep sections there are fe"rniculsires. a type of underground conveyance t h a t comes to the surface to load and unload.

If one wants a taste of mount- ain climbing he doesn't need to go any further than the main streets off Lausanne. The day we were there the streets were colourfully decorated with the Swiss flag-s red cross.

In order that we might par- take of the mountain scenery, we took the boat. trip from Lausannc across Lac Lemon to Geneva. One would almost think he was in our Rockies except that the country- side is much greener and the mountains not so rocky. Lac La- man is a long narrow lake so we were able to enjoy the mount- ains on either side.

Geneva is built around the west side of Leo union and is a much larger city than Borne. Unfortun- ately, it rained heavily all the time we were there. but the build- ing that stands out above all the others was the nessue of Nations building. Where we viewed it. it appeared to be a large stucco building. Finally we went buck go ggmg by train for our last night there.

We proceeded by way of Lu- come, passing through the second lowest tunnel in the World (about twelve miles) to Lussno. near the Italian border. Also set- in the mountains. it is abundant wlthpalm trees. tropical foliage and spacious parks.

The dog almost yanked Johnny Saxon off his feet as he followed the Girl. "Take it easy, pali" Johnny said. running.

It was perhaps a. hundred yards to where the woman's figure was walking ahead. Kay was first to reach her. She flung her arms around the slim. tall figure and gasped. "Mother! What is it? What's wrong?"

The dog, pleased, made snort-

inn sounds as he bobbed his head up and down and tried to jump up to caress Irene Smith. He could have easily knocked her off her feet. Johnny held him back, watch- ing Kay-watching, also. this tall, graceful. beautiful woman who held the answer to a strange mystery.

Irene had stopped. turned part- way around, was looking down in- to the girl's pretty face. There was a serenenesa about Irene Smith, a calmness in her eyes that indicated she was hardly aware of where she was, or the time of night, or what was hap- pening.

Johnny held the dog, patting his side. quietlng him. The wo- man had .not yet turned fully a- round to look at him. She merely stared at the girl.

"What do you want?" she asked quietly.

"Mother, don't you remember..." Kay stopped. a sob catching in her throat. She moved back from lrene Smith as though her moth- er were a. stranger. she turned

her head to stare helplessly at ter)

cd, "I thought...she knew me." She made a gesture with her hand. "Perhaps you..."

Johnny stepped up to them. He had the flashlight turned on again and the woman first saw the dog. she reached down and carefully touched his head. the way any person might pat an an- imal that is somewhat strange.

Then she saw Johnny's features revealed in the flashlight glow. Her whole manner changed. In- stantly she seemed more vitally alive. Her slim figure reached out and touched his hand. Her eyes lighted.

"Bart," she said. "I was coming to see youl"

Johnny's brows lifted. He caught Kay's expression, that Lelpless look as she slowly shook her head in .uzzleme t.

He smiled and said lightly, "I thought you'd come-Marie." He was conscious of the touch of her cool fingers. "That's. why we started out to meet you."

"You didn't have to do that, darling." the woman said. "I would have been there anyway. Today is such an important one. remember? You've . . .decided?"

He wondered what. in the Lord's name he was supposed to have

decided. Watching her, he said quickly, "Yes . . . sure." Relief was mirrored in her

beautiful gray eyes. "But." are said softly. "I knew you would.

The dog, seeking attention. was carressing the woman's hand. she looked down. Her manner chang- cd slightly. She kept looking at the dog and when Johnny said: "But why did you come hm? she did not seem to hear him.

He glanced at Kay again. There was frantic appeal in her eY65 35 she made a. swift motion that told him to try again; to attempt to stir a spark of memory In the woman's mind.

Again he said. "But. Marie. why did you start so early? It isn't even morning yet. I thought---"

The regular monthly meeting of the Earle of Hillsborough Chap- ter. I.O.D.E.. was held on Tues- day, June 5th at the home of Mrs. G. Raynor.

Clothing andi knitted articles from the three I.0.D.E. Chapters will be on display at the Art Cen- tre, Friday, June 8th, at 2 to 2.30 p.m.. before being sent to the British Save the Children Fund.

Arra gements regarding the an- nual Cooklng School being held Nov. 6, 7 and 8th are in prepara- tion.

Three new members, namely: Mrs. J. Er Barnett, Mrs. C. 2 Porter. Mrs. W. S. McMurty were nccepted and welcomed to the Chapter.

Materials were distributed among the members for work for the fall, as well as the senator- ium library summer list.

On May 31st, the Grade 4, Miss Emily I-Iiggins' class of West Kent school. held a splendid Junior Red Cross meeting, The president, Miss Carol Chandler. presided. Meeting opened by the Juniors re- peating "The Declaration of Ser- vice" in unison. Minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved. Roll call was answered by 9. favorite spring flower. The treasurer reported having on hand 35.50 raised by auction sales and collections. The Circulation Man- ager reporied on the sale of mag- nzines, that sbout 45 copies have been sold each month.

The various conveners of clean up, waste paper basket, brush nnd programme committees gave their reports and new officers were al- ected for the next two weeks.

Clean-up Committee: Carol Ann Hogan, convener, gave her report and appointed Judy Brennan and Carolyn Owen as new committee.

Waste Paper Basket: Convener David Ives gave his report and appointed Roger Birt and Paul Oakes as new committee.

Health and Cleanliness: Con- vener. Rogerscantlebury. report- ed and appointed Katherine Campbell and Carol Ann Hogan.

Brushes: David Ives and Roy Bcantlebury were the next two weeks.

Attended Rotary tiovernors' Meeting At Lake Placid

Mr. Edwin C. Johnstone, Rotary Governor of District No. 284. has returned from attending the International Assembly of incom- ing Rotary Governors at Lake Placid, N. Y. He was accompan- ied by Mrs. Johnstone. . The Assembly was attended by delegates from all over the world where Rotary is established. Rep- resentatives were present from such places as Ceylon, Iceland, Japan. the South American coun- tries and Scotland. Mr. John- stone expressed himself as being greatly impressed by the gather- ins and the spirit that predom- inated among the members. Following the week-long confer- ence. Mr. Johnstone was one of a panel of 12 delegates who spoke on the.rt-suit of the conference the topic of which was "As I Now See It."

All delegates were briefed on the principles of Rotary whose motto is "Service Above Self." Following the Assembly moul- inxs. Mr. and Mrs. Johnstone at- tended the '1nternationai Con- vention held in Atlantic City. Over 12.000 delegates were pre- sent. They were away some three weeks.

District No. 284 Assembly is being held this year at Amherst. on June 25th. There the Rotary Governor will meet with the various club presidents and secre- taries. Dlstrict No. 284 includes the Marllimcs. Newfoundland and part of the State of Maine. in all some 49 clubs will be visitefi during the year by Mr. Johnstone as Governor of the district.

1 Sunday School convention At Kingshoro

..' The North Eastern King's sun- duy school convention was held in Klngsboro Baptist church on Wed- nesday, May 30th. with the pres- icient, Edison Rose in the chair. The afternoon service of worship was led by Rev. H. R. Bell, follow- ing which Mr. Whitney Dalrymple of the Maritime Religious Educat- ion Council was introduced as leader of the convention. He in turn invited the delegates to identify themselves, so that all might become acquainted.

The minutes of the last convent- ion were read and adopted, and a financial statement showing S52. remitted to the M. R. E. C. receiv- ed the approval of the convention. A nominating committee headed by Rev. W. B. F. Corkum was ap- pointed by the chair. while Rev. R-. MacLeod was appointed to head the resolutions and courtcsies com- mittee.

Ten schools answered roll call. with delegates asked to emphasize the most interesting activity of the year. The reports. summarized on In wall-chart, formed the basis for a stimulating discussion entered into by most of those present. Theisupper hour in the vestry was a goodly time of fellowship and discussion among the delegates.

Following the evening worship service. Rev. W. B. F. Corkum re- viewed the work of the M. R. E. C. Mr. Dalrymple showed slides on the leadership training camp at Cliipman N. B. and demonstrated typical available film strips for church schools. The nominating committee brought in the follow-
