Under the 1931 Act, on a total expenditure of $17,000.0o0, the cost of admin- istration was $43,000; the ncxt year, with $42,- 000,000 expended, the cost of administration was $85,000; the next year the cost was $67,000 on a total of $26,000,000 in round figures; the next year, $87,000 0n an expenditure of $41,ooo.0oo. or about two per cent. The following year, 1934 on an expenditure of $40.500,000, the administra- tion cost was $88,800. For 1935 on an expendi- ture of $49.50o,000 the administration cost was $140,000. The next year, 1936, administration 00st was $179,000 for an expenditure of $4, .- 000,000; and last gtear, despite all the talk of nonomyu and drartic reduction in actual relief disbursement, $225,000 2cm spent for the admin- istration of $27,000,000; or between eight and ten per cent, compared with two per cent during the Conservative regime. - This increase of over 40o per cent in the cost of relief administration under the King Gov- ernment is due, Mr. Bennett charges, to partisan _mismanagement. It is certainly a glaring ex- ample of governmental inefficiency.

The grand total of imports into Jamaica dur- ing the year under review was £6,138,379 c.i.f., including imports by parcels post valued at £184,273, writes. Mr. F. W. Fraser, Canadian Trade Commissioner at Kingston, in the current issue of the Commercial Intelligence journal. As the corrcsptmding figures for 1936 were £5,- 073,815 and £149,884 respectively, there was an increase in 1937 of £1,064,564 in total im- ports and of £34.389 in parcels post. The 1937 total of imports is the fourth highest on record. having been exceeded only in 1920, 1928, and 1929, when the respective totals were £10,313,- 282, £6,376,398, and £7,027,013.

Imports from the United Kingdom account- ed for 33.7 per cent of the total from all coun- trise as against 38.1 per cent in 1936. Compara- tive percentages for the United States were 18.1 Ind 17 respectively, and for Canada 14.9 and 16.3. Other countries were credited with 33.3 per cent (18.6 per cent)_

The substantial gain by the United States was chiefly the result 0f larger imports from that country in 1937 than in 1936 of agricul- tural machinery, coal, hardware, lumber, canned meats and leaf tobacco.
