Two Orpuans.—This play, whieh has had the gréatest run of any modern piece on record, will be produced at the Academy of Music on Tuesday evening next. It will be produced with sceni¢ accessories, augmented caste, and new costumes, Miss Kate Claxton has made this play world famous, and we feel certain our citizens will patronize a drama which has the endorsement of the United States and British press.

On Thursday night last, Samuel C. Oul- ton, for some years past proprietor of the Baie Verte Hotel, committed snicide by drowning. Deceased was 72 years of age and was at one time a very prosperous man. A few months ago, being forced to leave the hotel from financial difficulties, he was for some time in very poor cir- cumstances and this, no doubt, led him to the fatal act.

To PREVENT OR To CURE Bed Seres.— A. CERTAIN REMEDY. —Take fresh, clean hemlock bark and make a very strong tea of it by boil- ing it in water. ‘The bark must not be ground, Strain the tea, and put te a pint of it apiece of pure alum the size of a nutmeg. Use thisa little warm to prevent a chill. Bathe the part three times a day with a very soft rag. ‘This hardens the skin as well as heals. It is best te use it 80 soon as a patient is confined te bed. NoRTHUMBEEKLAND Crrcvir Courr.—The case of R. R. Call, Wm. Muirhead and John Sadier vs. Mutual Union Insurance Cempany, which was commenced on Tues- day afternoon, was finished on Wednesday. His Honor granted a nen-suit on applica- tion of Mr. Weldon, Q. C., but the plain- tiffs, through Mr. Thomson, Q. C., would not accept it, and went to the jury fora verdict, which was given in their favor. The point claimed by the defence was a de- viation by the tug, which invalidated the policy. The obtaining of the verdict will have the effect of compelling the defendants to move to have it set aside. Another case by the same parties against the Western Insurance Company of Providence, was witharawn. Both these suits were brought to recover £6,000 insurance on the steamer Sultan, lost last year in Northumberland Straits, while bound from P. E. Island to Pictou.—St. John Telegraph.

THE Menpetssoun Cius Concerr.—The small audience which assembled on Friday evening to listen to the performance of this Club, was certainly not in keeping with the excellence of the programme, nor was it creditable to the musical culture of the our people We fear that more money will have to be irredeemably lost, in im- porting ‘first class performers, before that standard of excellence in ‘*‘ the musical cul- tivation of the masses” is reached, which a philantrophic enthusiast from a neighbor- ing province once declared to be advisable. Such, however, as attended were amply re- paid for their outlay, the performance, if anything being in advance of that ef the previous night. Miss Lewis again won loud plaudits by her sweet and finished ren- dition of ‘‘ the Sands "of Bee’—by Sul- livan, and ‘*Twickenham Ferry,’ for each of which she received an encore, and by which she has made herself such, a favorite with her Charlottetown audience, that should she ever renew her acquaint- ance she may rest assured of a warm re- ception. My Dsar Sin—I note in yesterday’s issue of the Examiner a letter signed ‘*Dramatic.” I de not wish to impugn the veracity of your correspondent; but his statement that we played to a fair house, is simply ridiculous, as the receipts were worst of the season, and not sufficient to cover gas and music. Now, we never change the bill unless through sickness or unavoidab‘e causes, and then we invariably place a programme in the hands of the purchaser before he buys a ticket. Even if this were not the ease, the writer of the letter is evidently acting with malice pre- pense, inasmuch as it weuld have been an easy matter to return to the box eftice and have his money refunded ; or if suffering from any yrievance, he could as easily have written to me personally and I would readily have made the uimende honorable and returned the 25 cents, instead of in- truding his woes upon the public. This is generally done by any dissatisfied person. So I presume the writer is what we technically term adead head! De mortius nil nisi bonwm.

However, if the party will call on me personally [ will give him the amount paid for entrance fee, if he has paid any, and also give him afree admission to the Two Orphans, on Tuesday. together with my frank apology,which is best I can do as Tam enceavoing to earn an honest livelihood and trying to pay my way in the face of many obstacles, which should induce your corres- pondent to be lenient, and not to try to injure me in the public press.

Building Improvements? Te the Editor of the Kvominer.

Sin,—l wish to ask our @ity fathers (who are supposed to have jurisdiction over such matters) if they intend allowing the Building which is about to be erected at the corner of Great George and Euston streets, - to project some six or eight feet on the principal thoroughfare. The foundation is already prepared and the intention of the builder is to abstract a considerable portion of Great Gedrge Streets.

Can a private individual thus encroach upou city prope If the present attempt is not at once checked, a precedent will be established which will permit any person te use portions of our streets for building pur- poses.

MARKETS. (QurBec, Sept. 14. Since cur last report we had several arrivals of fish and oil, which has all been promptly taken up. Seal oil has been sold at at 37j¢ per wine gallon. Cod oil in good demand at 48$c de Labrador are now arriving freely, and have been bought up at $5 per bri for No. 1, and $4 per bri for No. 2. Three lots of salt salmon have changed hands at $17.50 for No. 1, Green codfish is in demand, and what- ever lots arrive, are immediately picked up at $3.50 to 3.75 for No. 1, according to qua- lity. Prices will rise high until orders now on hand are filled, and we fully expect to see fish cheap this fall. The catch below is large and the present high prices will attract many seekers to our market —Henri C. Bosse & Co’s Circular. Toronto, Sept. i4.— Market inactive but steady. Flour quiet; Oatmeal remains weak; Common goes as low as $4.00, but good to choice is worth $4.10 to $4.20. Wheat steady; ehoice No 1 Spring brought $1.10, and No. 2 Fall 98c for Middling, and Red Winter sold at‘98cf. 0. b. Oats unchanged at 35c. Barley quiet in car let, but on the street 6,000 bush sold at 60c to 70c. Potatoes beginning to be wanted in ears, with 40e bid. Wool inactive with buyers and sellers apart and offerings very small; dealers usually bid only 27c for Fleece but choice might bring 28c. MonrreAaL, Sept. 14.—-There has been a fair enquiry for horsefiesh during the past week both here and in the country, but trade is restricted by the high prices asked for good animals. The exports from this city for week ending Saturday, September llth, were 111 horses, costing $11,294.50, averaging $191.75 a head; against 109 horses costing $9,227 for the week previous, averaging #84.65 each. A brown working horse brought into the city from Lancaster, yesterday, was sold for $110. For «# pri- vate family, a bay mare, 6 years old, weighing, 1,250 lbs., was purchased to day for $140.
