Dealing with Fort Amherst, Mr. Bond notes that it was erected immediately after Lord Rollo, sent by- General Amherst, took 11' ise‘ssion of the Island on .Aug. 17, 1758, following the capitula- tion of Louisburg. Located 300 yards from the water on Fort Lot, west of Charlottetown harbor, it consisted. of a large square re- doubt with a’broad ditch. Mount- ing 18 pieces of cannon, it con- tained some handsome barracks. Soon after'it was attacked by the French and Micmacs, but both at- tem ts failed.

B’gcause it was commanded by higher ground, Governor Patter- son had the fort dismantled soon after his appointment (1770). The Governor granted Fort Lot (about 300 acres) ineluding the Site of Fort. Amherst to a person who reconveyed it to the Governor, whereon ‘he built a handsome farm house and extenswe of- fices. '

In 1796 proceedings were in- stituted against this grant pvthé Duke of Kent and the buildings and improvements made by Gov- ernor Patterson were vacated and fell into decay. For some. time after the placc was cons1dered

Prominent Hotel Operator Dies Of Heart Attack

James M. MacFadyen, 66, a prominent Hotel operator, died in the P. E: I. Hospital yesterday morning as the result of a heart attack.

The late Mr. MacFadyen was born in St. Catharines, P.E.l., where he farmed tor ‘a short time. He then entered into a partner-

Gregory apparently ignored the request but in 1289, Pope Nicholas the Fourth did send missionaries . . but they were far too late and too few and the chance was lost.
