Mics Minnie Turner, lately of East Somerville, Mass., ought to have lived in the days of the rack avd thumbscrew. The woman who corrected the babes under her eare in Montreal, a year or two ago, by poulticivg their bodies with No. 1 mustard, was a mild irritant compared to the youog lady who used to teach the juvetiiles in East Somerville their A B C’s and arithmetic. This young woman abandoned the old- fashioned detention afier hours. method, and the “taws” as meaus of euforcing discipline in her school, aud evolved out of her own inner consciousness, a way of meeting the situatios which King The- baw would have admired and possibly envied. When the youvgsters~ misbe- haved, she did not keep them in, or make a sudden dash at their hend with ea strad, She never sent them to a green bench, or ordered them to conceal them- selves behind the schoolroom door. Such methods were too primitive for this delightful young woman, She simply stood her victim vp before her, and with devilish ingenuity com- peled them to partake of cayenne pepper! A weak child of seven ycars of age, committed a trifling breach ot @Gis- cipline in her school the other’ day, awd Miss Turner administered the usnal dose. The little fellow caught cold in his mouth on his wey to his home, and before the next morning his mouth and lips and tongue were greatly inflamed and very sore. A few duys later he died. Miss Turner told the School Committee that she had not given him a great deal of the :ed pepper, and if she had dove what she had no business to do, she was very sorry, The father of the little boy said that his son had told him during his agony about the cayenne pepper, but he declined to prosecute the teacher if she would resign her position and leave the place.
