The Osage ratifica- tion was signed and with the reports in hie pocket, Mr. Sturges started for the Capi tol. The graut, however, was never passed because a man in a position to de mand it asked $30,000 for his vote. Brib ery was an unpardonable sin with Mr. Sturges and he lost these millions simp!) because he refused the $30,000 to the im.. whose vote was needed. The same reaso caused him to abandon a $20,000,000 pro ject to supply New-York City with wate: from the Ramapo, Valley lakes in New Jersey. The metropolitan alderman wanted too much.

Lacrosse in Canada,

The history of lacrosse in Canada dates back a great many years, when the game was first played by the Indians and al though it has changed slightly in minor details, it ia still as exciting and exhilarat- ing as when first playes by the origina: owners of the soil. The first record of its existence as a whiteman’s game was that in 1850 a elub was formed in the city o: Montreal. which played matches with the Indians, though they must have been in ferior to the red man, for it is recorded they captured butone match. Of the Montr a elub’s history, but little is known, exvep that it did net thrive im its early days. **Lacrusse,” says Mr. Whituey, ‘‘may be enid to have first become popular in 1860, when the «fforts of the Montreal clab anu the exhibitions of the Iroquois Indian» gave the game its firatimpetus. This war increased the following year by a matci. between the whites aud Indians for th: pleasure of the Prince of Wales, who we: visiting the Dominion. It was in this yea: also that Mr. Beers published his litth pamphlet, and made the first attempt t. reduce the game to a set of rules, Un fortunately, after this good start, the gaine seemed to lose some of its pupularits about Montreal with the departure of the Princes of Wales. Inthe meantime, how- ever, a c.ub had been formed at Ottawa, which aid the game @ great service by de feating Montreal, for in the effort to re- trieve their lost laurels, an increased in- terest was once more aw akened in lacrosse. In 1867, the Montreal club framed the first laws of lacrosse, aud the sare yexr called a convention of Canadian clubs, which resuited in the organizatioa o: the National Lacrosse Association in Canada.”

Two Thousand Persens Perish by Flood in China,

The New York Herald’s Shanghai correspondent writes as follows, under date of May the 6th: A terrible calamity occurred in the Yang-tse-Kiang at Han-Yang, the populous city opposite Han-Kow, on April 2Ist. A sudden freshet swept from the Han River on the night of April 21. owing, it is believed, to heavy rains in the npper part of its water shed. The first rush of this flood present- ed almost the appearance of a wal! of water. The flood, strewn with wreckage of all kinds; rose at the rate of aix feet an hour, The scene was a terrific one, no less than seven hundred large junks and boats being instantly dashed to pieces against each other or against the banks of the river, whieh was suddenly convert- ed from a placid stream into a gigantic mill race, running at the rate of three knots an hour. The loss of life is appalling. the estimate being that nearly two thou- sand men, women and children, the most of whom were sleeping in their boats, were drowned. Official reports record the recovery of fifteen hundred bodies between Yun-Cong and Han-Kow, while many are known to have been washed ashore, where they were buried without the omicials be- ing communicated with by the country people. Three hundred bodies were thrown up on the bank at one point two hundred miles above Han-Kow. At sev- eral places where the river was narrow the water rose twenty-seven feeet in as many hours.

The attention of Commercial Travellers is called to the following sections of an Act popes by the Legislative Assembly of Prince

ward Isiand, Session 1894, intituled “An Act to Impose a Direct Tax on Certain Classes of Traders ” :—

1. “From and after the passing of this Act every casual trader not permanently residing inthis Province doing business within this Province, commoniy known as “ Commercial Travellers,” and every person not permanent- ly residing in this Province, and who sells either for himself or any other person any goods, wares or merchandize in ths Province, or solicits or canvasses for orders either for himself or any other person for the sale, ex- change or purchase of any goods, wares or merchandize within this Province, either by the production of samples, photographs, cata. logues, printed or written matter, or simply by word of mouth without the production of samples, photographs, ——- printed or written matter, shall, before he or she enters upon the business of so selling any goods, wares Or merchandize, or soliettir Or can- vassing for such orders, pay tothe Provincial Treasurer of this Province an annual licen e fee or direct tax of fifteen dollars.”

2 “Upon payment of the said license fee or direet tax, the said Provincial Treasurer shall grant a license authorizing the person therein named to sell goods, wares and mer- chandize in this Province, and to solicit and canvass for orders for the sale, exchange or purchase of goods, wares and merchandize within this Provinee. Such license shall be granted and remain in force for the space of one year following the date upon which the said license shall granted and no longer.”

3. “ any such Commercial Traveller or per- son not permanently residing in this Si. vince as aforesaid, who, after the passing of this Act, shall sell any goods, wares or mer- chandize, or solicit or canvass for orders for the sale, exchange or purchase of any goods, wares or merchandize in any manner afore- said within this Province without havin first paid the said license fee or direct tax, anc obtained the said license, shall for each and every occasion upon which he or she shal! sell any goods, wares or merchandize, or soli- citor canyass foran order for the sale, ex- —- or purchase of any goods, wares or merchandize as aforesaid, be liable to pay the sum of two hundred dollars tothe said Pro- vincial Treasurer.”

This Act 1s now in force.
