The hall was well filled ; but it is our opinion that had the management done away with two or three rows of chairs and placed the remaining rows further apart, the would have contributed to the enjoy- ment of the audience—the only attention lacking last night. Aas it was, those occu- pying chairs at the ends of the rows had to move into the aisles to let those past who had seats farther in. As to the concert it- self, the pregramme was well varied and well performed. The fire; and most im- portant feature was Mr. Vinnicombe’s otchestra. Charlottetown ought be very grateful to this gentleman for the high order of the music so beautifuliy rendered by the well-assorted instrumenta of his large orchestra. The nicely-balauced groundwork of atring-instruments, violin- celloa and viol has body given to it by the bariton? and cornet wind instruments, while the clarionst lends a pathos and richness in contrast to the crispness of the well-played piccolo. Mr. Kuight manages the clarionet very effectively; and, to our mind, Mr. Rodd’s baritone solo was one of the gems of the performance last night. [t seems unfair to particularize, for all went smoothly and well. Kven the drum was wel) played, and it is almost sasdening! to contrast. the weak applause which follows’ the performances of tils most excellent’ band of players with the rapturous recall| iven some leas excellent numbers. Mr, ‘innicombe secured his accustomed encore. | Our Charlottctown audiences never let him| off too easily, Miss Palmer, too, and Miss Earle had to re-appear, while Mr. Rogers was scarcely allowed to throw aside his policeman’s uniform after singing his comic song. Mr. Rice would not have tired his/ hearers had he sung a dozen songs. It is such a treat to hear a man sing without effort in a full clear rich voice aad to hear him enupciate every word—and ‘hat is Mr. Rice's performance always. Miss Earle and Mr, Fred. Davies sang the duet “In Filial Love,” from “Il Trovatere,” which suited Miss! Earle’s clear fresh voice to a nicety.

There is nothing of the declaimer about Mr. McLean ; he has none of the ex- aggerated manners of some elocutionists; he is natural and his hearers are therefore always pleased with his recitations. It was once said that nothing is truly beautiful with- out a tinge of sadness, and Mr. Maclean’s narrative aided just that amount of sadness needed to perfect the programme last night. The next feature is one of the best—Mr. Percy Pope’s statuary tableaux. They were all well couceived, well presented and were as like beautiful marble statuary as possible to make living figures. The first was the best ; not a motion was observable. Mra. Blanchard, Miss Carey and Miss Strickland and Mr. Ings deserve as much credit for their excellent

erformance of their trying parte as does Mr. ~~ for his grouping, etc. And last but not least the manoeuvres of the Fusileers under the excellent command of Drum Major Bremner. The drill was splendidly done, the cross and S figures calling for most particular praise. Here again leader and support de- serve equal eulogy. The audience was most pleased when the ‘storm of applause brought the brigade to the front a second time. Last night's concert was in every way an excellent

Ought to be Reconsidered.

How do euch actions correspond with the principles laid down by Christ? ‘* Therefore, all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you do even tothem”? This law is ignored, and there is much reason to fear that wmany have their consciences so debauched in political matters as to be unable now to discern betwixt good and evil. On account of these things and many more that might be mentioned, the committee are compelled to come to the con- clusion, though sad to confees it, that the state of religion is comparatively low iu our church and country,”

There seems to be no doubt about the trend

of this quotation, ‘“‘ Cursed and dishonored by political corruption” is of unmuistak. able meaning; and there is a_ astern humor in the comparison of the work of & gerrymander act to “ chain lightning,” as can be seen by reference to the line of the gerrymander in King’s Couuty. The new arrangement of the districts of King’s County would be very inconvenient for electors, es well as for candidates. But the meaning of it is easily seen. It is to prevent Conservative candidates in King’s County from being returned. Mr. Clow quoted figures showing how the gerry- mander was calculated t bring about his own defeat. He said that he was mis- taken im the spirit of the people of King’s County if the plot were successful and he believed that the electors of the whole Province would condemn such rascality. The disfranchisement of Dominion officials is characierized as a disgraceful Act on the part of the Government. The Commis- sioner of Public Works had boasted that bis administration was fair to all parties and tothe country, Last year nothing was done to the roads until the middle _ of the summer. In the spring they were in comparatively good order, but for want of repair they got into a bad state. Was this fair to the country? For the packet service to Murray Harbor last year the highest tender had been accepted. When he asked for an explanation in the House, the Commissioner of Public Works replied that a second schoonerwould be put on; but this was not done. The Government paid 100 per cent. more and the people ob tained less accommodation than if the low- est tender had been accepted. Was this administration in the interests of the country ? Mr. Bell followed. He labored hard and showed conclusively that the introduc- tion of the Legislative Council amendments as ‘‘ suggestions,” was a preconcerted echeme to necessitate their discussion in the House with closed doors,
