William Ross could save his soul and his bacon at the same time. He was the strongest man in the Grit ranks, the only man having the shighect chance of TomMing the con-tituency; but then he was a pub lic contractor, and as such ineligible as a candidate. The story of the present Minister of Militia’s visit to him was told during the last session oi Parliament. But the correspondence is more charming than was the veroal recital by Mr. Vai. Mr. Ross, the contractor, addregsed the follow- ing letter to the Minister of Public Works :
