Now that the crest question, the Liturgical Wrk, and the debating prospects have been consigned to the vaults of history, another topic has arisen to set the campus tongues n-wag and to keep the corridor philosophers engaged till all hours of the night in battles of facile wit. This topic is not a new one by any means, in fact it seems to be at just about this time each year that the cry is resurrect- ed. "Down with the Red and Whltel" This year, the clamor has

On Nov. 29th. 1955. the death occurred of Mrs. Bell MacDon- ald, Rose Valley. The deceased was in years of age. the wife of Daniel A. MacDonald who pre- deceased her thirty-one years ago.

Quiet and unassuming by na- ture. she left an indelible impres- sion upon those whose lives she touched. Her countless deeds of neighbourllness and charity will be remembered. No more fitting tribute could be paid to her than to say, "A friend in

The funeral. which was held on December 2nd. 1955 from the home of her daughter, Mrs. Sam- uel D. Gulls. was conducted by her pastor Rev. H. S. Raynor, assisted by Rev. W.D. MacPhsil. It was largely attended and un- der the direction of Mr. Percy Dawson, C. , ud. The pail bear- ers were: Messrs. Ben Cousins. Dencber Graham. Joseph Hughes. Jack W. Macltenzie. Samuel Nicholson, Frank Newsome.

dlttorsed into the classrooms; it presides at the meal table; it re- igns over the great majority of the current "hull-sessions". The only unifying principle that can be observed connecting the various up- roarious factions is that they are

literary organ, for each seems to have its own idea of just what would constitute the ideal set-up. As in many movements, those who about the loudest are very often the most uninformed and the least stable in their convictions. This very fact has been proved to the satisfaction of many where cool and gentle reasoning has suc- cceded in correcting various mis- conceptions and thereby quieted antagonist. Some have resurrected a familiar battle cry, "Yearbook", and look to this for their emancip- ation. Others clamor for a paper when it is a well-known fact that contributions can scarcely be ob- tained to fill the three-issue quota of the Red and White. Perhaps it is time for thoseewho are raising the clamor to stop and reconsider their values. When man has an automo”' that won't run, he doesn't immediately throw the car away and walk from there on. No, he locates the trouble and repairs it, for experience has taught him that it is much more efficient to travel by automobile than to walk. Our inspection of the current Red and White situation should be likewise made in this vein. If on looking at the public- ation, we find that there is some- thing lacking. that the format is dry and over-worked, that the rnaterialTin it is habitually unin- teresting. that the standards are set so high that the average stud- ent csnnot meet them, (to state but a few of the objections that we have heard), then it would seem that the reasonable approach would be to search out and cor- recto the troubles rather than re- ject the magazine altogether. SUPPORT OF FACULTY The fact of the matter is that the Red and White was establish- ed for very noble and usefull pur- poses. It has the support of the faculty and also that of interested students. It has an impressive tradi- tion. That the present format has been somewhat overworked, might be conceded, and at the present time this matter is being investi- gated with an eye toward provid- Ing a more refreshing approach. The calibre of the material itself and its diversity depend upon the students themselves, Nemo dat quod non habei. If objection is to be raised on this point, perhaps it would be well for the critic to look for the answer in himself, for the question is quite retrospective. Should one contend that the stand- ards of the Red and White are on too lofty a plane for him to ever expect to meet them. here again he is in fact pointing an accusing finger at himself. These standards have been met in the past, and without too much exertion at that, and they compare favorably with

For one to complain that they the' standards of other reputable are too strict, too high-minded, or too "long hair", is to attest his own weakness, slothfulness, lack of the knowledge of the essentials of grammar and spelling. or some such defficiency. This last mention- ed dcfficiency might well be the crux of the problem. If a man comes to write his graduation thesis and finds that he has not his ml the ., grammatical tools, it would be quite easy to understand why he hasn't been able to contriblite worthy articles for publication in the Red and White. and also per- haps why he has spoken out ag- ainst the publication on some oc- caslon or other. Mem often attack something thatyihey don't under- stand simply because fear is often born of a lack of knowledge and understanding. But that a man should find himself in such a dire state on the eve of his graduation is unthinkable; a man who can't express himself has no business with a degree. That an Arts gra- duate shouid go forth so iii-pre- pared is even more unthinkable. It should be. then, that any and every Arts student should be cap- able of producing worthy and printable material for the Red and White.

Arts student, finds that he is un- able to meet the requirements laid down by the Red and White, then something is drastically wrong; and until it is corrected, there can been pointed out in this regard, by competent individuals, that the first blow that should he struck in this attempt to forge anew the breastwork of the Red and White should be aimed at the English program. There should be made certain provision for the correction of deficiencies and opportunity should be available for more in- tensive research nnd application of the rules of style of the recogniz- ed masters of the language. To throw such a student immediately into a study of the works of var- ious social muvements. the writ- ing of self-made philosophers, or the works based on past ideolog- ies, when in fact his faculties clam- or for basic English and the funda- mentals of style, is to miss the point of an interoductory English course altogether. we feel. Per- haps in the rectifying of this situ- 8Il0n. It will be necessary at first to lead the student with a scholas- tically coercive hand to the Edi- toris door by integrating topics suitable for publication with the regular matter of a composition course. However, we feel that with class chosen for this inaureratinn progresses along the path of achie- vement ahd grows in the facile use of the language, there will come a day when they will no long- er have to be lead: a day when, with confidence again restored to the venerable campus publication. they will feel proud to support it: a day when the noblest of the tra- ditions of the Red and White will be resurrected and sustained by a more interested and culturally improved student body.

TEMPTATIONS OF CHRIST POINT PITFALLS T0 MAN

Most of us realize the need we have for penance and mortificat- ion. Unless we discipline ourselves at times by giving up some of our legitimate pleasures, we shall not have the moral strength to make the right choice in time of temp- tntlon.

We also realize that we must be prudent in the amount and the kind of mortificatio-n we undertake. However, even though we apprec- iate our need for penance, and have been prudent in what we have undertaken, once we are und- er way there are still three pit- falls to be avoided.

After Our Lord fasted for 40 days in the desert, He was near ehauatlon and the devil tempted him with three kinds of tempta- tion. He tempted and tried Christ to find out whether He was the Son of God; so too we are tempted when we try to be child- ren of God by following the ex- ample of Christ.

After we have done a little pen- ance, the first temptation that comes to us is a certain form of despa' . What we have given up may not be very much, but the discomfort which results, suggests to us that the service of God is all pain. and Privation.

CONVINCING ILLUSION

This is an illusion, but a rather convincing one at the moment. We are tempted to des- pair of spiritual goods and joys, and this despair gives an exag- gerated importance to the thugs that we have given up.

We tend to clutch at the poor,

i'-' ,' C: which are within our grasp, because our hope in anything better has been weak- ened. We are tempted to sell out our higher interests for the sake of these others.

Thus, for eampie. when we tell a lie to gain some momentary sat- isfaction we betray our birthright. which is to know and to speak the truth. In this way Christ was temp- ted to satisfy His hunger by using ilis power of working miracles. the primary purpose of which was to strengthen the faith of His dis- ciplcs.

The answer of Christ should be ours also. "Not in bread alone does man live but in every word that proceeds fro mthe mouth of God."

If we are to overcome this tem- ptatlon, we must ask God to re- new nur trust in Him as our Fath- er and ask Him to increase our hope in the coming of His King-

In order to overcome this pre- sumption, we must ask Godto show us where His will differs from our fancies and ask Him for the strength to live according to that Will and to seek pardon when we have sinned against it.

If we are successful in our pro- gram of penance :nd self-disci- pline. there remains the tempta- tion nf the successful. the temp- tation of pride. When by the grace of God we have become or achiev- ed something worthwhile there is the temptation to worship the good thing which God has made, rath- er than God Himself.

Again. desires and energies that should be directed to God can be diverted to the service of some idol; and in this way great suc- cess can be attained in this world. Christ was promised the kingship of the whole wnrld if he would pay homlige to the devil. The ans- wer of Christ was. "The Lord Thy God shalt thou adore and Him only shalt thou serve."

JOHN GREENAN

-On the morning of January 21st, 1956, there passed away at his home in Newton, the soul of John Greenan.

He had been in failing health for the past few years. but the last few days before his death were spent in complete . ', - tion to God's Holy Will. As a re- ward he was blessed with a happy death having received all the rites of Holy Mother Church. He peacefully passed away in the presence of most of his family.

All through his life he was known and respected for his many good qualities of mind and heart. He was honest. indus- trious. ready and willing at all times to help a friend and neigh- bour in need. In his home where he will be missed must. he was a model husband and father.

He leaves to mourn his wife,
