Tue death occurred suddenly on Saturday night of J. S. Lathern, M. D., son of Rev. Dr, Lathern. ‘Lhe Doctor complained during the day of having an oppressed feeling and difficulty in breathing, and on this account retired early—about ten o'clock, About au hour later his mother, passing his room on her way to bed, looked in, and, o! serving that the doctor appeared rather pale, called her bus band, when it was discovered that their son 1 De. Treneman and Dr. Parkes were immediately summoned; but they could do nothing, as the late gentleman was beyond ali human aid, his death, doubtless, being due to heart disease. Although » young man, 28 years of aze, Dr. Lathern stood weil in his pI fession. He was a graduate of MeGill College in 1883, and also a licentiate of the ¢ C. P., andof the R. C. 38., of London, England. He was on the staff of Victoria General Hospital, and also on the staif of the Halifax Visiting Dispensary, and a Coroner,

well sttending physician to several stitutions, the late gentleman was very popular. He was shortly to have been married to a young lady in Prince Edward Island. The grief-stvicken father aud family have the heartielé sympathy of a circle of friends which extends beyond the city and province. The lamented deceased was a surgeon of the Hali- fax Garrison Artillery, and will be buried with military honors. St. George's Society, of which he was a member, wil! also attend. The funeral takes place to-morrow afternvon, at 3.30 o’clock.— Halifax Chronicle, Mouiay, 28th.

On the 8rd day of 89, during the absence of our hotel proprietor, we procured a stout cord and lowered our valise out of cur window, and made rapid strides towards the depot and took the train for George town. As we could not take the train with us on board the Stanley, we left it for the further use of the P. E. Island rail way.

Giling the Waves.

Almost every vessel that encounters heavy seas reports, on reaching harbor, that oil was used in calming the waves with great success, and had it not been for the oleaginous liquid, the shipand all on board would certainly have gone tothe bot- tom. Notwithstanding these multifarious stalements, the percentase of vessels lost appears to remain about the same. Even if the oil has no great effect upon the angry Waters, it certainly produces a powerful! influence upon the imaginations of the mariners. They believe it adds to their sifety, fears are allayed, good judgment is maintained, and all hands work diligently.

—The Stuart Exhibition in London is proving quite a success. The popular in- terest in the portraits and other reminders of the deposed dynasty has developed to a remarkable degree. Crowds flock to see the exhibition. Noble families have lent relics in their possession to swell the num- ber and variety of the objects shown. Be- sides the pictures, there is a punch bow! which was broken in two when Charles Ed- ward wanted to brew a new potion, and his host thought he had better go to bed.
