In spite of some misses in the early turnips, root crops look good. Potatoes are a little late and there are many things that can happen between now and digging time. However. the general appearance of the crop is-promising.

Dairy Situation

In spite of the dry weather and poor weather and poor pastures in June. butter production is holding it's own with last year on the pro- vincial level.

The quality of our butter has never been better. Our dairy in- spectors report that only in a very rare instance are they finding I churning of second grade butter. Of course. at this period of the year most of our surplus is being put up in solids and is moving in- to storage. It is difficult for our factories to sell first grade prints in competition with lower grade butter from other parts which is coming in to the Nova Scotia and Newfoundland markets at lower prices.

Every effort is being made to have similar legislation enacted in Nova Scotia whereby all butter sold to consumers must be stamp- ed according to grade. This legis- lation has already been passed on the Island and in New Brunswick. The managers and salesmen of our cheese factories met Monday evening to iron out some market- ing problems. The cheese market for Island Cheddar cheese is 3995- However. only limited fillanm"-S5 are available for market yet. V

HOWEVH. the Western farmers now have an orderly method of marketing their grain and the C. T. A. has taken the lead in assist- ing the Eastern farmers to estab- lish a more efficient purchasing arrangement for our coarse grains. When we can work with the West- ern anizations and eliminate a lot of the excessive brokerage and distribution charges between the grain growers of the West and our Eastern livestock f ' ,then we will have disposed of most of the trouble.

It takes time to work out ar- rangements of this kind that will be -, anent and sound. Further details of this meeting and a re- port from Mr. Shaw will explain the matter further.

Poultry Meeting

As a result of the general poul- try meeting Monday evening. the principle of a combined market- ing board and poultry organizat- ion was approved.

The details of this plan will be worked out and another meeting of the producers, representatives from the egg grading stations. poultry procesors, and hatcheries will be called to establish a Pro- vincial Board and to adopt or amend the proposed plan.

A very definite interest toward improved merchandizing and ad- vertising methods for eggs and dressed poultry was noticed. The necessity of advertising and put- ting up more attractive and high quality products in our consumer markets is now more essential than ever before.

C. F. A. Meeting At Fredericton

The semi-annual meeting of the Canadian Federation of Agricult- ure will open in Fredericton. New Brunswick, Monday; Sept. llth. Potato marketing will be one of the chief matter: under discussion. For a week previous to this meet- ing. Mr. Leslie Gilmore, Chairman of the B. C. Coast Vegetable Mar- keting Board and Mr. Charles Bradbury. Chairman of the North B. C. Seed Potato Growers Assoc- iation will be in the lvlaritimes. They will be attending meetings in each Province with the farm- ers. dealers. and marketing board officials. It,is hoped that we will have our Potato Marketing Board well established at that time and it is fortunate that those menhave agreed to come here and help smooth out many problems ihat will undoubtedly arise.

Agcno Flour

. Amendments to the Canada Pure Food Act. effective January 1st, 1950, prohibit the use of the Ag- ene process as a bleaching and maturing agent for flour. Some time extension was given to west- ern mi-llers to enable them to in- stall the necessary equipment for the alternative maturing agen-t known as the Dyox process. This new process is not as good a bleaching agent as the one form- erly used. resulting in a somewhat darker" bread. The change of color is something the consuming pub- lic will have to get used to. and though some mills have not as yet complied with the regulations. it will merely be a matter of time before all mills in Canada will be buying the Dyox process.

It should be pointed out to all

consumers that the Federal Trade Commission in the U. S. A. was instrumental. after thorough vestigation. in having their Food Act amended to prohibit the use of the Agene process in the PN- duction of flour. It was found that although the Agene method result- ed ln a better bleaching job. it had a harmful effect upon the fin- ished product which could result in harm to the user. The Agene process has been banned in Brit- ish and American mills for some time. It should be made clear to all that the regulations of the Canada Pure Food and Drug Act are de- signed to protect the health of the consuming public. A recommend- ation to this edect was made to the Government by the C. F. A. and Women's institutes a few years ago.
