June 7- (Special)- fllgh prices particularly in the Maritime Provinces of Canadian- manufactured chemical fertilizer is partially explained in an article on the subject published today by the mining. metallurgical and chemical statistics branch of the Dominion Bureau of Statistics. The author. Hamid Mcleod. sets forth that Canada in 1941 emorted chemical fertilizers to the value of $34,586,000, the great bulk of which was purchased by United States buyers. In addition. Canadian fer- tilizer was purchased in consider- able quantities by 34 other coun- tries and paid‘ for in "hard cur- rency“ or in goods.

Under the genernl Canadian Government policy of selling as large a volume of manufactured goods as rossible for scarce U. S. dollars. the chemical fertilizer in- dustry is regarded as most helpful in the U. S. dollar-saving program. At the same time, the fertilizer companies are selling their pro-

OTTAWA. June 7-Progresslve Conservative members of parliam- ent were happy tonight at the ro-election of Premier George Drew's Government in Ontario.

They expressed keen disappoint- ment at Mr. Drew's defeat in his own riding.

John Bracken, Progressive Con- servative natlonal leader. made no public statement on the election result. However, he sent Mr. Drew o telegram expressing congratulat- ions on his Govemmeuifs return and regrets at his personal defeat.

C.C.F. members expressed de- light at the increase in their membership 1n the legislature and were particularly elated at. their victory in Ontario riding, where a Federal lay-election takes place bo- morrow.

Prime mnister Mackenzie King made no comment on the result. but Liberal members indicated privately their disappointment at the Ontario Liberal Party's show- ing at the polls.

New Pumping Station To Boost Water Supply

An additional water supply of one million gallons daily for the citizens of Charlottetown will be- come an accomplished fact this fall after the laying of one aild one-quarter miles of 14 inch pipe has been completed and a new pumping station has been con- strucled.

The plans were made yesterday after a conference of the Commis- sioners of Sewers and Water Sup- ply had been held at the City Hall with Mr. H. W. Lea. Montreal, who is consulting engineer to the Com- missioners.

The proposed developments will be made at Union Road and will include the sinking of l0 new wells on the Gray and Newman properties which are located about. five miles from the Ciiy.

Mr. Stanley Matheson, engineer of the Water Department. said yesterday that the daily water consumption of Charlottetown is between one and a. half million and two million glillons. About one million gallons ofthle quantity is furnished. Mr. Matheson said, by the B-ackiey Station with the rc- mainder being supplied from the Malpeque Road station.

Tenders for the excavating and laying of the pipe are expected to be issued before the end of the month.

Dharlos Warren lash 0f Motor Dar Fame Dies

BE Y HILLS. Calif. June 'l —( >-One of the United States leading industrialists, Charles Warren Nash. who rose from an orphan farm boy in president of General Motors, died at his home yesterday after a long illness. He had been a victim of heart disease for the last two years but remained active in the affairs of the Nash Motor Company. which he found- ed, until‘ about six months ago. He was 84.

Born in Illinois, Nash was an orphan at six and was bound out under a guardianship court order to a farmer near Flushing, fvllclr, to work for his board and keep.

He quit farming in 1890 and went to work for a carriage works that William C. Durant built into an automobile manufacturing con-

cern in Flint.

When Durant purchased the Buick Motor Company, he made Nash president and general man- ager. Two years later Nash was pre- sident of General Motors and a power in the industry, but he stepped out and formed ills own company, building the first Nash in 1017.

Deal With Libel, Dulpable llomiclile And Sex Offences

Commons by Justice Minister Ilsley. The maln changes deal with

libel. culpable homicide, sex offences and manipulations on stock markets. Trials by jury. powers oi magi- strates, thefts from the malls and intimidation of persons by threats are also covered.

Mr. Ilsley, obtaining first reading of a bill providing for the changes. said the new legislation consists of 46 sections. Many of the changes, however, were to correct printing errors or to clarify language.

Most oi’ the changes. if accepted by Parliament. will become effect- ive Nov. 1. Frhose dealing with the changes in the powers of magi- strates will not become effective until Oct. 1, 1949.

The libel section of the Code would be ohalnized so that a person changed with conspiracy to publish a defamatory libel will be subject to trial only in the Province in which he resides or in which the libel 1s Published.

"This means, for example, that a Toronto newspaper mail charged with conspiracy to libel will have to be tried before Ontario courts. He will not be subject to subpoenas to such a charge in the courts of another Province.

The Rev, Louis Dooley. son of lvfr. Edward Dooley and the late Mrs. Dooley, Charlottetown, was ordained a priest of the Roman Catholic Church last Sunday by the Most Rev. James Boyle, Bishop of Charlottetown.

His Excellency was assisted by the Rev. R. G. Ellsworth anu the Rev. J. W. McCardle. Chancellor of the Diocese. The Rev. Patrick McMahon. Rector of the Basilica, was Master of Ceremonies.

Father Dooley was assisted by Rev. P. F. MacDonald.

Present in the Sanctuary were the Rev. Bernard Gillis, Rev. Dr. J. P. E, O'H:illley, Rev. Earl Dal- ton, and. the Rev. David Mc- Taguc.

At the conclusion of the o.din- aticn, His Excellency spoke on the dignity of the priesthood and con- gratulated Father Dooley and his family. After the ceremony. Fa- tller Dooley gave his blessing to members of his family and to relatives. In the afternoon there was a reception for him at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Claud Car- oll. Si. Peter's Road.

Fother Dooley received his early education at Queen Square School. From there he went to St, Jun- atans College where he graduated in 1944. He then entered Holy Heart Seminary. Halifax, where he isompleted his studies for the priesthood.

At 12 midnight. A.D.T.. the Progressive Conservatives had 40 pee‘ cent of the total vote then counted. tlhe CCF. 26 per cent. the Liibcmls 29 per cent and the other parties three per cent.

The final vote was sure to ccme close to the 1945 record of 1.786.790 ballots and might even exceed it.

C.C.F'. victories ranged from Miss Agnes lilacPhall, veteran parliamentarian who was the first woman ever elected to the Dominion House of Commons, to that of Reid Scott, university stu- dent in his early twenties, vuho both won Toronto seats.
