A "lovely shower was held in honour of Mr. and Mrs. Cyrus Acorn in Pownal Hall. The happy couple. alter mingling with their friends. were finally led to the platform which was decanted with flags. in honour of the groom's service overseas. by Miss Judy Acorn and Master Gordon Herman. Miss Judy, wearing pink organdy with shoulder length veil. Master Gordon very formal in top hat. wheeling a prettily decorated carriage to the lovely strains of the Wedding March played by Mrs. Nathaniel Macxlnnon. Mrs. Harold Acorn. ably supported by Mraclifford Chandler, the groom's best. man and lifelong friend. with whom he was overseas, followed the bride and groom.

Mr. Lewis Herman addressed the following:

"On this happy occasion we are. here to celebrate the marriage of Cyriis Acorn t.o Ann MacQuarrie and to welcome Mrs. Acorn very heartily. I am sure we wish them all the joys of a happy wedded life. some of you may'not have met. Mr. Acorn. so now we will have a mass introduction. Mr. Acorn. meet. your friends."

I)". H. C. Meyi-s. a graduate from a Chicago medical college. turned criminal and poisoned seven per- sons before the long arm of the law finally caught up with him. Why did this clever young medico turn to murdering people? Because he wanted to get rich quick. First, he saw to it that his victims were heavily insured. Then he put them out. of the way by using poison.

He was first. brought to trial December. 1993. It. was wrecked by a dramatic incident. As counsel were delivering their concluding speeches, one of the jurors suddenly went in- sane and had to be placed in a men- tal instltutlon and a new trial was ordered.

In the and trial. which lasted aev. eral weeks, the Judge observed that the evidence was plain, and mu the crime was one of the most atrocious of which he had ever heard. so he instructed the Jury in plain language to bring in it verdict of murder in the first degree.

The jury retired and spent many hours in arriving at a decision, be- cause one man would agree to noth- ing more severe than murder in the 2nd degree. Finally, his col. leagues yielded through sheer ex- hauation.

The June meeting of the Aug- ustine Cove Women's Institute met at the home of Mrs. Lester Macwilliama. Meeting opened by Slnslng the "Institute Ode", fol- lowed by "Creed" in unison. Roll call was responded to by twenty- three members and ten visitors. Minutes of the last meeting were read and approved. Correspond- cnce was read and discussed.

It was decided to hold a social in the school the last. week in June. each member taking lunch. It was moved and seconded to give five. dollars to the teachers for prizes at school closing. Mrs. Eldon Dawson and Mrs. Wendall MacFadyen were appointed as delegates to the executive meeting for next year.

Reports of the committees were then heard and new ones appoint- ed. Sick and program committee. Mra. Fred Leard. Mrs. Kenneth Cameron; litnch committee. Mrs. Joseph Wadman. Mrs. Fred Leard, Mrs. Kenneth Cameron, Mrs. Don- ald MacDonald.
