Therefore so long as the least doubt exists regarding the state which suc- must strike one that, judged merely by the standard of taste, it is very bad form to go where we have not been invited. Confident as we are that an invitation will come in time, we have no assurance of a welcome if we thrust ourselves in prematurely.
So while the house of Death may seem desirable to many a poor sojourner here, he had better wait for the appointed time to go. We on earth know when we can receive our friends, and we pre fer not to be surprised by unannounced guests. We should show as great courtesy to the host in that mystic land as we desire shown us here.
Then again, I dare say there are com- paratively few middle-aged people, in every score, who have not at one time or another experienced a momentary suicidal mood. Some great financial jisaster, reducing one from affluence to poverty; the loss of a very dear one by death; a blow to the affections, or a long illness, has turned many a strong, naturally cheerful nature into a morbid channel and induced suicidal tenden- cies.
Those who have passed out of such shadows into the sunlight of ‘aappiness, look back with horror at the tempta- tion which assailed them, and thank God that they were saved from such a fate.
How terrible it seems, ther, to think that any responsible human being should put forth one argument, or utter one word, which can influence some wretched fellow creature, temporarily assailed by thoughts of self-destruction, to end his life.
Icould mention the names of two people well known in the world of phil- anthropic and noble work, one & man and one a woman, who in different parts of the globe both contemplated suicide in early life—one owing to poverty, one to a disappointment in love. Without doubt. had either of them read an ably written article at that critical hour on the ‘Rights of the Suicide,” it would have served to turn the scale, and two valuable citizens of the world to-day would have been absent from the post of duty.
However riuch a brilliant man may enjoy writing or saying a ‘‘new thing” and startling the conventional world from its calm, it is a serious matter to send out thoughts, no matter how well clothed in words, which shall act as leaden weights upon the reckless and earth-weary souls struggling in the sea of despondency. Far nobler is it to throw out a plank, even if it be worm- eaten and time-worn. It may serve as a life preserver for the unfortunate to cling upon until assistance comes in

A DIPHTHERIA SCARE.
There is no doubt but that diphtheria at this season in its worst form is prevalent in many cities and small towns, At the same time, that fact is no reason for fright ening people out of their wits, with every new case of sore throat. Hundreds of per- sons are said to have had diphthena who only had a severe sore throat. The form of sore which often passes for diphtheretic is what old people call quinsy. “Putrid sore throat,” known long before diphtheria An old hospital nurse in Boston, says: “It ain't the clear cold of winter that lays peo- ple up with colds, catarrh and sore throat», and lays the children low with dip)itheria ; its the soft, pleasant, alternating with the wet, slushy days.” This is very true, be- cause then the air is laden with poisonous vapors. The first symptoms of true diph- theria there is fever, some stupor, and dif- ficulty in breathing. Very sharp pains are often felt in the neck glands, just below the ear. The tongue is coated, the throai and tonsils inflamed, little white spots, which increase and turn to adirty yellow or brown color. Very many reliable peo- ple claim to have cured severe cases of diphtheria with Johnson’s Anodyne Lini- ment. Be that as it may, it is worth try- ing, because we know from experience it will curea common sore throat in one night, and thousands of people claim that no remedy known will relieve colds, catasrh bronchitis, croup, etc., as promptly. The Ottawa Board of Trade has ap-
roved of the adoption for Ontario of the couse system of land transfer. The Toronto Board of Trade did the same thing some time ago, and the Montreal Board of Trade has given the principle of the system its endorsation. The Torrens system makes it as easy to transfer land titles as to transfer bank stock; and this may be one reason why it is so siowly ac- cepted.

The Patron motion in the Ontario Legislature to elect county officials ou- side of county judges was defeated by a vote of 65 to20. The Patron amend- ments to the medical act were rejected by 71 to 15. As holders of the balance of power compelling each of the other parties to acquiesce in their demands, the Patrons are not living up to their programme.

When we started the now famous Suit Club we had no intention of violating any law ofthe land, But as it has been decided to the contrary by the Stipendiary Magistrate, we freely submit to that decision, and will discontinue operat- ing our Suit Club. Customers can still continue paying $1 per week, and have their Suits made when they require them at Club prices, namely, 20 per cent. discount, or they can have what money they paid in refunded. Advertising s what we were after, and we got it.
Look out for bargains in SPRING SUITS and OVER- COATS. We got the stock to cut prices and will do it.
