The news hit Wall Street like a bombshell. A. T. and T. stock closed up $21 at $223 a share, breaking a 27-year high on the New York Stock Exchange.
It will be the first stock split in the company’s history and the first change in the dividend rate in 37 years.
The recommendation by direct- ors will come up for stockholder action at the next annual meet- ing April 15. Its ratification is

On the news of the split, the stock shot up $3 to $205. Then an avalanche of buy orders forced suspension of trading. An hour and a half later trading was re- sumed with a sale of $225, up $23 on a block of 75,000 shares.
Directors said that if the stock split were approved at the annual meeting, additional shares would be distributed about June 1. It. is contemplated that the first quarterly dividend on the new shares will be made in July, 1959, at the annual rate of $3.30 a share. This is at the rate of $9.90 a share on the old stock.
The corporation has 100,000,000 authorized common shares of $100 par, of which 70,105, were out- standing on Sept. 1. The split would increase the authorized

St. John Council OK’s Plan For Courtenay Bay Causeway

The basic causeway structure-- from Saint John proper to the parish of SimondsT—would be built by Irving Refining Ltd. The sur- face roadway, floodgates and other components would be pro— vided by civic, municipal and parish units involved.
No estimate of the cost of the causeway was given and there was no indication of the exact route proposed. Previous studies. have a suggested a causeway run ning from somewhere near the foot of Union Street in Saint John to a point near oil storage tanks in the parish of Simonds.

Details remain to be worked out. and separate agreements would have to be concluded with the various governing bodies in- volved.
