For most of the year the Old Pas- ture has few visitors. Old Jed Thumper, the Gray Old Rabbit who is the father of Mrs. Peter Rabbit, lives in the bramble-tangles in one corner. In another part Reddy Fox and Mrs. Reddy make their home. Perhaps this is one reason why the Old Pasture has few visitors most of the time. But in summer when blueberries are ripe the Old Pas- ture is a popular place. 0! course the Cows are there from spring un- til late fall. That is what the Old

Pasture is for. But with the ripen- ing of the first blueberries, visitors are there every day. And as there are more and more berries, more and more visitors come. Some are in feathers. Some are in fur. Some are small. Some are big. 01' these Buster Bear is the biggest. He is bigger than Farmer Brown's Boy. He is bigger than Farmer Brown himself. And how he does love blueberries!

He is one of those persons who likes to see but not to be seen. But he is also one of those who is ruled by his stomach. Much

of the trouble that Buster Bear-

gets into, is because of his appetite. However, in this he is no different from a lot of people that we know. There are altogether too many who are ruled by appetite instead of wisdom.

Because he was so big. Buster seemed to think that all those berries in the Old Pasture were his. Folks who are very big and

Usually Buster Bear paid no attention to anyone. He attended strictly to business, the business of eating as many berries as he could stuff himself with. It takes a lot of berries to fill Buster Bear. Yes, sir, it takes a lot of berries. This time he had hardly started when he heard a couple of little thumps on the ground. The first time he heard them without knowing he

had heard them. He paid no atten- tion to them. He didn't so much as turn his head. He just continued to shovel the berries into his greedy mouth. Of course he really didn't. shovel them in, but you know how it is with greedy folks when they eat too fast, they seem to shovel'the food in.

The little thumps were repeated. This time Buster did take notice. He turned his head. Just as he did so; there were two more little thumps. For an instant Buster for- got to swallow the berries that were in his mouth. He almost choked. You may think because he is so big he must be clumsy and- slow. That is your mistake. Few

Unfortunately for South, it was East who got in with the ace of diamonds, and his return of the spade jack gave the defenders three more tricks.

No safety play was apparent in this hand, but one nevertheless existed! That play was to lead dummy's club queen at the second

,trick! Certainly, it East could

cover the queen with the king, he would do so, and when he actual- ly played a low club, declarer could discard his diamond queen with assurance of success! West could not make any return that would hurt declarer. Even if he had a six-card spade suit. and could give East a ruff, South would still be safe. Nor would it matter which defender had the diamond ace, because with the dia- mond queen safely out of Souths hand, declarer could control West's return at the third trick-prc- sumably a trump - go to dum- my's trump nine, and then lead the diamond king through Easl. ruffing the trick if East played the are, or discarding a spade if East played low.
