MEETING AT KENSINGTON.

Interesting Addresses by Mr. Hod-

son and Others.

Mr. Hodson, Live Stock Commissioner held his firet meeting ot Kensington on Monday night Mr. William MeNeil 3impson, was chairman. The first speaker was Premier Farquharsoo,who introduced Mr. Hodson and his colleagues and ex- plaired the nature of the meeting.

He explained the etfuris made to get free transportation to exh’biton-, and stated that this fall all exhibits are to be carried free to several exhibitions of the Maritime Province Over the Goycrnment railways. He dwelt on tke necesssity of the Maritime Provinces making the most of their oppor tunities and str.ving to get better transport facilities to carry their produce cheaply to the markets and not be handicapped as at present. :

Mr. Robertson, of the Nappan Experi- mezial Farm, gave a short address on the neceessity of cooperation and pushing the interests of the farmers.

Mr. Hubbard, Secretary of the Maritime Provinces Live Stock Association addres~ red the meeting briefly on the necessity of keeping better stock.

Mr. Hodson mentioned the advantages of the Lower Provinces iu regard to good pasturage throughout the season and the abundance of ourgroot crops—-far exceed - ing that of Oviario. He dwe!t principal- lyon the necessity of ovganization, and outlined the plan he would advise us to follow. Mr. Hedson explained the con- ditions that obtained in Ontario, follow ng the drop in the price of wheat, neas and borley which compelled the people to go into other business euch as dairving and live stock. He gave adetailed account of the progress made by breeding up the stock and showed how prices edvanced with the improvement in the quality ofthe stock, Again he explained the advantage of cheap fre’ght rates, how organization could effect improvement in these lines and how the Ontario Associa tioa managed the winter live stock show. Lhe judges of beef cattle told the compet_ ing farmers why they gave the pzizes in all cascs, and then had the animals buich- ered and the beef qualitics of exch shown to the producers,—why one animal wee worth more than others apparcptly as good, and how they could breed in ‘ines to obtain the best results.

Stewart, Prince Caartizr.—“This Tar- tan is copied from a riding cloak worn by Prince Charlie, and left with other articles in the castle of one of his followers whose descendant now owns it—Sir James Mur- ray Threipland of Fingaek. Tne cloak has & velvet collar, and is bound withared silk ribbon,which has faded at the eleeves into a light purple, but it is difficult to say what was the original color of the collar, while the colors of the Tartan are as fresh as if made yeclerday. The colors and design are the same as inthe Tartan imported by Messrs Paton & Co, and worn by the Kirk boys, with the exception that the blue, which is light, has been placed in the centre instead of on the outside of the check. Bapty Damacep.—The Turret Bell, which was ashore at Byron Island, has been docked at Halifax and pumped dry. An examination of the hull frevealed the fact that the damage is very serious. The plates are broken all along he starboard side and beneath the boilers the ship is considerably torn. A survey will be held and teaders for the ship’s repair will be called for. The contract will be an exten sive one.

The Duke of Marlborough had a most interesting experience in South Africa, and, though participating in many fights and undergoing long marches, came through without a scratch or a day’s illness,

After leaving Bloemfontein, where

he was attached to Lord Roberts; staff , the Duke joined Ian Hamiltan, acting as “galloper” for him during the hard- fought progress toward Pretoria. Duke had several narrow escapes. ‘ one occasion a shell burst within a -_» feet of him. A fragment hit Gener: Hamilton in the small of the back and knocked him down, but by great luck it failed to penetrate. The Duke es- caped all the flying fragments. } Entering Pretoria ahead cf the army, the Duke, accompanied only by his cousin, Winston Churchill, rode out to the enclosure where the British officers were imprisoned. These at first took him fora Boer, but when he was re- cognized the prisoners sat up a howl of delight.

A Boer sentry raised his gun and was about to fire point blank, but the commandant stopped him and sur- rendered to the Duke, who promptly put the Boers within the enclosure.

The British officers, pale, and with beards of six months’ growth, cried, laughed and cheered like madmen. Then they hoisted a Union Jack made of stolen virkleu, and which was put together during their captivity.

The Duke has returned home be- cuse Genera! Hamilton’s staff has been broken up. He says he is proud of his Yeomanry, though he was with them but a short time. He was im-

mensely struck with the Canadians, and perfecty satisfied that the British soldier, especially the infantrymen, is as geod asany in the world. He be- lieves the Boers’ resistance will ccn- tinue at any rate until November, as they are firmly convinced that if the Democrats are successful in the Pre- sidential election the United States will intervene in their behalf.

Considering his ancestry, it is scarce- ly surprising thatthe Duke took a keen, practical interest in his work, and lived just like any officer, being often onthe shortest of “short com- mons.” But he looks better, instead of worse, for his trip.

From 1848 to 1898 there were twenty eight attempts, many of them success- ful, on the lives of reyal personages and rulers.

Pietro Acciarito tried to kill. King Humbert on April 22, 1297.

Four attempts were made to assas- sinate the great Napoleen.

Queen Victoria’s life has been at- tempted three times.

Two efforts were made to kill the Prince of Wales.

Napoleon III. was frequently shut at but died in bed.

The King of Prussia was twice fired at in 1851, but escaped injury.

King Victor Emmauuel of Italy nar- rowly eccaned death at an assassin’s hands in 1856.

The Quo: of Greece was shot by a student in 1862.

Abrah»m Lincoln, President of the Unted States, died on April 15, 1865, frem a bullet fired by Wilkes Booth the night before.

One attempt on the life of the Ger- man Emperor in 1873 and another in 1878.

_ King Alfonso of Spain was shot at in 1878.

Alexander II. of Russia was assassin- ated on March 13, 1881, in St. Peters- burg. Unsuccessful attempts on his life had been made in St. Peterburg in 1866 and in Paris in 1867.

President James A. Garfield was shot by Charles J. Guiteau on July 2’ 1881, and died on September 19.

Presi¢ent Carnot of France was stab- bed to death by Caserio Santo la Paris, June 24, 1894.
