Bent on Venge»nce.—A most rema:kable case of bovine intelligence which recently came to my knowledge, and for the truth of which [can vouch, has prompted the writing of this paper. A cow and steer — the Jatter two to three years old—were the only occupants of the barn-yard where the occurrence tock place. A baiting of hey was put out to them, the cow taking posses

sin. The steer wished to share it; but the cow, like some higher animals, was selfish and was bent on taking the whole of it, and as often as he would manoeuvre around from side to side to get w bite she would drive him off at the point of her horn, The steer$was so persistent that at

last the old cow’s patience gave way, and, making a determined and vicious charge on him, she punished him severely, though he was her own offspring. The steer felt badly hart, uot only in body but evidently in mind as well, and immediately started out ofthe yard and off down the lane toward the pasture where were the rest of the stuck, bellowing vengeance at every step in a language which was unmistakable tothe by-stander, and which the mother well understood, as she ceased eating and listened intently to the threatenings of what was to come. When these died away in the distance she resumed her ration, but with evident apprehension. Indue time the steer was seen returning, bringing with him a compinien larger and stronger than himself. As they approached, the rumblings of rage and revenge could be again heard,

which grew louder as they came nearer.

National Publishing Company, is a book

that will assuredly make a noise. It has in

it a resemblance to the strange case of Dr.

Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, wich this difference, } that the metamorphosis is not caused by a drug and the change does not make the man a demon or a savage beast, but a jovable philanthropist with a scheme for wiping out poverty and misery, It treats of a mental diseases, A prominent London lawyer who had been a great brain worker all his life, finds himself talling into daily reveries lasting for hours. He supposes he is asleep at such times, but his vid con- fidential clerk knows that he goes cut and comes in while in these stupors, but does

uot tell him, fearing it will cause bis master to retire from business. An cniry 18 dis- covered in the bank book showing that the lavy r had paid £720 to one Edmund Gray by check. He knows of no such person, calls his clerks, hunts up the returned check, and pronounces the signature a forgery—remarkably clever, but still a furgery. After eight years other forged letters turn up and valuable bonds are re- moved from the private safe, and on being traced are found to be banked to the credit of Edmund Gray. The old lawyer and his friend are in great excitement over the matter, especially as socialistic tracts signed by Gray are found on the lawyer's table, which makes bim furious, as he is « believer in the divine right of property. With rare skill Besant carries the matter along, show- ing that the lawyer in his reveries loses his identity and becomes Edmund Gray, the very antipodes of his real self—genial, generous, 4 fond dreamer of an idea} future o be brought about by his personal] efforts. The story is a good one—so good that it is hard to lay it down before the finish.

We have received the first number of Worthington’s Illustrated Magezine, a monthly journal for the family. Although in the majority of instances the first num- ber of a new publication is general/y more or less like its contemporaries already in the field, an exception must be made in the case of Wortbington’s Megazine. In the matter of letter-press and illustrations it is first class, and the names of well-known and popular writers appear on the list of contributors. The articles this month are splendid, and comprise a list of must inter- esting subjects A Ccecid dly original feature in this magazine is **Departments,” which must be seen and read to have its value appreciated. Published by A. D Worthington & Co., Hartford, Conn., $2.50 a year.

He is thirty years old, and has a wite and fout children in Boston. He has worked in Bangor. The checks ranged from $8 to $325. McLean operated in many New Hampshire towns. He is unsound in mind.

This shows a good deal of enterprise on the part of ou: esteemed contemporary, and we take much pleasure in acknowledging receipt of a copy of this souvenir.

Srormy TEMPERANCE Meketinc. — A Moncton despatch says : **Rev. J. Eastburn Brown, Reformed Episcopal, raised a little storm at the Sunday afternoon temperance meeting by declaring that the temperance organizations were not Joing the work they should be doing. Referring to the Sons of Temperance, he said their meetings were good eutertainments and a good place for the young ladies and gentlemen to meet and court. He said he was ashamed of him self as a member, and asked the chairman, also a prominent Son of Temperance, if he was not ashamed too. The chairman dis- sented from Mr. Brown's views, as also did E. McCarthy, another prominent Son of Temperance.

Suppen Deatu.—About ten o’clook Jast Friday night, Mrs. James Perry (Fidele) died very suddenly from neuralgia of the heart. She had been ailing for a couple of years past, but on this evening was about the house, apparently quite smart. Just previous to her death she was out to the kitchen and talking to other inmates of the uouse. Returning to the sitting room she complained of a severe pain about her heart, and said she could not stand it, and a remedy was at once procured from a doc- tor and given her. she fell back on the lounge, expiring al- most instantly.
