There was a large audience in attendance to hear this famous ' t . In his speech, he outlined in brief the background of Communism, Just where it had taken root, and then proC8EdGd to develop several of the most important techniques used by the Communists. He emphasis- ed that, before attempting to com- bat Communism. it is necessary to have a complete understanding of exactly what it is. He also em- phasized the importance of lead- ership for the future. A vote of thanks to Father Ouroussoi was lnoved by Ju e C. Gavan Duffy and seconded y P. C. Although the college year is quickly drawing to a close and rvcryone is busy with the final exams. there is still time for the students to take an avid interest in softball. This year. however, something new was added to the activities in softball. Yes. it might be called a feature. At the initia- tive of the senior Class, a special day last week was set aside and has officially proclaimed "Quain- quam Day". in honor of a great athlete and ember of their potent softball team. Martin "Quam- quam" MacMilian. Highlight of the day was a parade to the soft- ball field. headed by ”the man of the day" and the players of the senior team. The parade terminat- rd at the mound where several priceless (in the literal sense! gifts were presented to the great athlete. In the game which fol- lowed against Grade X and Com- mercial, "Quamquam" pitched the

first inning for the seniors. The,

only distasteful part of the fea- tivity was that the Senio lost the game.

At any rate, according to the statistics released by Leo Mac- Quald, manager of softball, the settler team is leading the Intra- mural League at the completion of the schedule. This team has won live games and lost one for a to- tal of 10 points. The other stand- ings are as follows: Sophomore. ii points; Juniors, 6: Grades XI. 6: Fresliman. Grade X11 and Grade K and commercial. 4 each. In the semi-finals which will begin as soon as possible, Juniors will be playing against seniors and Grade XI against sophomores.

V Although the activities in sports end with the college year, never- theless. this year the students will or following one sport in parti- cular throughout the summer. We refer to the fact that Father George MacDonald will be a mem- her of the Blsiey team this year. we can assure him that all the stutit-nts will be following him closrly in the press -- yes, even those over whom he was prefect in Memorial Hall. . . The last social oi the year was held last Thursday. Like all the soclais throughout the year. it WI! largely attended. According to the tumors which are afloat, this social was very successful from the point of view of "social con- tracts" made for the Prom. Jerry Clinton. the man in charge of the socisls. is to be tulated for his efficient management oi this social activity.

Perry said that civilian conditions in the Allied sector of Germany were good right now. and added that food was plentiful and prices for it compared favorably with wages received by the working people.

He found this to be in direct contract to the life of the aver- age peiison in Britain where ev- erythim: is rationed so strictly that the general run of citizen has much difficulty in obtaining sufficient food to satisfy his fam- ily. .'I!ic ont outstanding variation noted was in coffee. In Germany, Pte. Perry said, good coffee costs spprnsilmately 84.00 per pound. They have a variety oi coffee made in Germany Jvhich he be- lieves to be a poor substitute, and it is only used because of the diff- iculty in obtaining real coffee from the Americas.

Welcome Canadians

Germans in general welcome the Canadian soldiers and do their best to make them feel at home. Last Christmas the unit to which Pte. Perry was attached had over 300 more invitations for dinner than they had men. He personally spent the Christmas holidays with a German doctor and his family and reported that he was royally welcomed.

His experiences over there have convinced him that if the peoples of both countries had a better understanding of each other there would never be any danger of an- other war. He feels, too, that this

Student Choir Due Here Tomorrow

He was sewing over- seas this time with the "High- land Battalion", a unit oi the North Nova Scotia Regiment and had two Charlottetown men as officers. They are Capt. Vern MacDonald. second in command of the regiment and Lieut. Lloyd MacPhee, platoon commander.

Although a bsndsman he serv- ed ln the past war as a sergeant in the Engineers and while over- seas this time he was assigned to demolition work.

Private Perry is a son of the late John R. Perry. a veteran of the First World War and a mem- ber oi the old Military Band of that era. His mother. Mrs. Bern- ard Corrigan, is still living in this city. He is married to the former Miss Edna Perry, of Rumford. Maine. and the couple have three children. He expects to be at home here until the middle of June when he will be posted for duties somewhere in Canada.

Death In st. John Of Mr. Frank J. Likely

In the death of Frank J. Like- ly yesterday Saint John has lost I citizen long prominent in the social and business life of the city. Mr. Likely appeared to be in his usual good health and had left for his ofiicc. He aparentiy suffer- ed a recurrence of a heart con- dition of long standing. and had stopped his car. His death occurred before medical aid could be sum- moned.

Mr. Likely was born in saint John, Dec. 1, 1879. a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Joseph A. Like- ly. He received his education in the public schools of the city and at Mount Allison Academy. Quite early in life he entered the busi- ness conducted by his father and became its treasurer. a position he held at the time of his death. The firm of Joseph A. Likely Ltd. specializes in the merchandising of hcavy-dimensioned British Oo- lumbia fir timber and the manu- facture of concrete pipe.

Mr. Likely was a member of the advisory board of the Royal Trust company. He possessed a keen mind and contributed much to the su ,, of the business interests with which he was associated.

On Oct. 30. 1912 he married Miss Bessie F. Armstrong. daugh- ter of the late C01. and Mrs. A. J. Armstrong of Saint John.

Mr. Likely was interested in every move for the betterment of the community in which he spent his life. He was a member of St. Andrew's Curling Club. the West- fleld Country Club. The Union Club, and the L. M. club. He also held membership in and was set- ively interested in the Saint John Tuberculosis Association. He was s. member of the Church of Eng- land and worshipped at St. John's (stone) Church. where for many years he served on the Vestry.

There are surviving his wifeand two sons. J. Andrew Likely of Charlottetown, P. E. l'.. and Rob- ert Likciy of Saint John: three brothers, Arthur H. Likely and 1. Gordon Likely of Saint John, and

Dr. D. S. Likely of New York City. and one sister. Mrs. G. M. Johnsto of this city. Six grand-

children and several nieces and nephews also survive.

The body is resting at the res- idence. 86 Duke Street. The funer- al will be held on Monday after- non from st. John's (Stone) Church. with service at 2.30 o'- clock. Interment will be in Porn- hiil Cemetery.

A large group of officers of local regiments have been busy writing examinations following courses de- signed to qualify them for higher ranks.
