Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, September 8, 2005 — Inspectors from the PEI Liquor Control Commission are cracking down on the use of false identification by underage drinkers.

The use of false identification is acrime. The inspectors can lay charges that can result in a $500 fine. Minors using an altered driver’s license can lose their license for up to a year. The PEILCC intends to strictly enforce these rules.

“Underage drinking and entering a bar with false identification are against the law and we want people to be aware of that fact,” said Wayne MacDougall, CEO of the PEI Liquor Control Commission. “Something that seems relatively simple, like such a false ID to get into a bar, can have very serious consequences,” he said.

Borrowed or altered driver’s licenses are the primary source of false identifications.

Under Section 6.1 of the Highway Traffic Act, anyone who presents a false ID for the purpose of identification, who permits another person use their photo ID, who defaces or alters a photo ID or who possesses an altered or defaced ID is subject to a fine of up to $500 on summary conviction.

Reporting a license stolen and getting a duplicate to use as a false ID can also land a person in serious trouble.

Under Section 89(e) of the Highway Traffic Act, anyone who gives a false or fictitious name or address in any application for a driver’s license or makes a false statement or conceals a material fact in the application to the Registrar of Motor Vehicles is subject to 12 demerit points anda fine of $500.

UPEI Working Hard to Make First Years More Comfortable

This is a good year to be anew student at UPEI. The greatest small university has a new initiative in place to ensure first-year students are made to feel at home in their new academic environment.

The TGIF program (Transitions: Going Into First Year) is a year-long venture that is designed to ease any possible culture shock new students may feel while adapting to campus life. The program’s main focus is to make new students feel like part of the UPEI family.

“The intent is to ‘roll out the red carpet’ for our first year students and to ensure they are on a successful path — academically and personally,” said Tamara Leary, the student success program coordinator.

And UPEl is the only university doing this in Canada, she added.

“Actually, the idea is unique to us right now. I had the opportunity to present the TGIF initiative to other Student Services from other universities from across Canada - and it was well received!”

In prior years, UPEI has hosted a new student orientation which extended through the first. week of classes; starting Labour Day Weekend. While the orientations have been very successful in the past, this is a continuation of that effort, she said.

“Part of TGIF is the annual New Student Orientation (NSO) program offered to first year students to familiarize them with the campus community and to provide a variety of social and educational activities.”

“Traditionally NSO activities run through the first week of — school, under the TGIF initiative activities geared to assist first year students with transition issues will be

offered throughout the academic year,” explained Leary.

For example, she said, there will be opportunities for first year students to participate in exam preparation seminars and to take advantage of information sessions on how to use the library.

Not only did the NSO-ers receive free gifts to aid in the studying process, but the entire school seems to be rallying around the newest additions to our UPEI family.

“The TGIF initiative has provided an opportunity for the campus community to work together to ensure first year students are welcomed and supported,” explained Leary.

Dr. Vianne Timmons, the Vice President of Academic Development at UPEI, echoed Leary’s comments, stating the entire campus community wants our newest recruits to feel at home while they are studying here.

“We want students to be welcomed and supported by the campus community,” she said. “The most important thing for a new student is to find a connection with the campus. This program is about facilitating connections for students.”

Dr. Timmons added this program allows UPEI to be one step closer to where the university would like to be in regards to welcoming new students and retaining current ones.
