Among the vessels in port are the brigt. | ‘‘ Natalie,” the schooners ‘‘ Industry,” “Union,” “ Mary C.” and ‘ Ruby,” at Railway Wharf; and two large schooners | at Knight's Whart.

Of the latter, one is bound for Boston with a load of potatoes ; the other for French St. Peter's with produce and cattle.

The ‘‘ Natalie,” commanded by Capt. | Bernard, has just made a round trip of ex-| traordinary quickness and good fortune to) Trinidad and back. Messzs. Wricat Bros., who recently nrebased the steam will formerly owned e Messrs. Morrow & Co, are importing the most improved grist mill machinery, ineluding French burrs, revolving sieve and covlers, etc., and will shortly commence the manufacture of Island flour of the best quality. They now run saw and shingle mills; and being practical and industrious men, may reasonably be expected to he awaited upon by the goddess of fortune, who, however fickle, generally rewards well directed and persevering effort.

The schr. ‘‘J. R. Stewart,” Capt. Mc- Donald, is still at Railway wharf, waiting repairs !

The new light- house on ‘The Point” was lighted up for the first time on Wed- nesday last. The light is not particularly remat kable for its brilliancy.

The canning business is lively with fresh geese. ducks, hares, beef and mutton.

Oats are selling at 40 cents. Messrs. Matthew, McLean, & Co., McDonaid, Mc- Donald, & Co., Connolly & Co., and J. G. Sterns, are the chief buyers.

The remarkable forgetfulness of the Kings County Advertizer has attracted at- tentica. How it failed when eracking up Georetown to advertize the fact that Sou- ris harbor, in King’s County, is still optn, and is one of the safest and most conveni- ent on the Island, is one of the questions ef the day in Souris.

Mx. Wa Srong, who rejoices in an artistic sign board which announces that he sells wines, ales, brandies, and strong drinks generally, is building a handsome new three story store and dwelling.

Ma. Joun Waits, formerly of Montague, is building a factory at the head of Knight's wharf; and in view of flourishing fish trade, proposes manufacturing barrels and boxes. The building measures 60x40 feet fhe machinery is now being made by Mesors. McKinnon and McLean, of this sity

Souris West is evidently thriving; and the iphabitafits have just given good evi- dence of their progressive public spirit. They have erected a splendid now school- house.

—_—_ or --- Commendabie. Tax schooner Neva, James Keay, Master, was frozen in at McEwen’s wharf on the 24th November, partly

laden with about 6,000 bushels potatoes. The weather continuing severely cold, nothing was done towards cutting her out until the 30th, when Angus McDonald, David McEwen, and others not only inter- ested in the cargo of the Neva, but alse do- termined that no vessel with cargo should remain all winter ice bound on the West River, turned out, assisted by the whole settlement, and succeeded in cutting the ice ahead of the- schooner all the way down to the three tides, a distance of seven miles, through ice from five to seven inches thick. The Neva, on the 3rd inst., got clear, and sailed out of the harbor with flying colors for Georgetown, where she is now finishing taking in the balance of her earvo for Boston. This manly effort on the part of Capt. Keay and crew, backed up by the shippers and their friends, reflects grent credit on all concerned.

Advices from Honolulu by the steamer |

City of Sydney describe the eruption of Mauno Loo, now in progress, as one of the grandest ever witnessed. It broke out on Nov. 5 about six miles from the summit of the crater, throwing off two great streams of lava, one of which is thirty miles long, 100 to 200 yards wide and about 20 feet deep. Terrible explosions accompany its flow. Some fears are entertained for the safety of

another direction. IMPORTATION OF SHort Horn Carrix. — The Halifax Chronicle says : ‘‘ The steamer ** Brooklyn,” which arrived on Tuesday from Liverpool, G. B., brought a very

valuable lot of thoreughbred short hern cattl§ for the Central Board of Agriculture.

ThisYmportation has been made in accord- ance with the recommendation of the Agricultural Committee of the House of Assembly. There are six yearling bulls, one young cow and two heifers.

Breach oF Trust.—Mr. Charles J. Keller, the Montreal lawyer, who has left that city under a cloud, was the custodian

of which had been invested in securities. There is a deticit, therefore, of $7,000. The keenest regret is said to be expressed by the Montreal bar on account of this default.

A Brrturnt SHowrr or Merzors.— Juat before one o'clock Sunday morning, the 28th, there was a brilliant and long continued shower of meteors rivalling any- thing ever seen in Portsmouth,New Hanip- shire. The meteors were of varied size, and in color ranged from a delicate crimson to arich intense gold. They fell in rapid succession, probably 400 falling in the space of eight minutes, and many of them burst, leaving gorgeous trails of culored light lasting several seconds. Similar re

ports come in from Rye, Greenland and

Hampton.

The Diseass of Cattie.

Ar the Corn Exchange, Berwick, Eng., Mr. George Flemivg, F.R.C. V.8., re- dently delivered an interesting lecture on the various diseases among cattle, but with special reference to ‘‘ contagious pleuro- pneumonia, splenic apoplexy, and tuber- culosis.” He said that splenic apoplexy was now in every part of the world, although at first it was only to be fourd on the banks of a Russian River. It was most destruc- tive, in some cases sweeping oif 50 per cent of the animals. He had reason to believe that it was more prevalent in England than was generally thought. Braxy had been clearly traced to parasites. The only way to exterminate the disease was to burn the animals, not to bury them upon the land. Referring to tuberculosis in animals, he said that this was a disease which was more known than suspected in this country. It was known among cattle deal- ers as consumption. The milk and flesh of the -diseased animals were very dangerous to human beings, producing consumption in them. It was a most important ques- tion, not only for agriculturists, brut for the country. Since 1841, wken it appear- ed in England, it had never leftit. He strongly deprecated the movement of cattle throughout the eountry, and said that the same measures with regard to the importa- tion of eattle from Holland and elsewhere should be applied to America, where the disease had recently existed to an alarming extent. But Congress had refused to move in the matter, and, despite all restrictions at their ports, diseased cattle were being constantly imported from America. In re- ply to some questions, he said that boiling the milk did not remove any of its danger ous qualities when it came from a diseased cow.
