A sap accidest occurred on the corner of Water and Queen Streets, shortly after eleven o'clock this forenoon, as a result of which Mr. Stephen Cummings, laborer, lost his life. He was engaged in hauling salt with sloven and pair of horses, when he slipped aud fell’ between the wheels The horses started, and the rear wheel went over the man, breaking into fragment: the bones of the lower portion ef the body over which it passed, Le was immediately oqnyeved tq the Charlottetown Hospital, but his iejuries were 80 serious that he died fifteen minutes after arrival. With admirable clearness and powerful reasoning, Mgr, O’Brien showed the obligations of Faith, and the influence it exercised throughout the English speaking world through the Apostolate of the Irish race, Referring to the demand now made for liberty by the irish peoplg, the Archbishop expreased his confideng» in the future ef the Irish people, and in their providential mission as the restorers of sogial order in the Europe of the future. Tue Satmon Sgason.— The Pacific coast salmon season bas begun on the Sacramento river, but there has been little news so far except that the run is very light, Qn the Columbia, fishermen have xed prices at 650. a fish for cannery boats and 75c. a fish for outside boats. From a production of over 1,100,000 cases in 1883, the pack dropped to 885,000 cases in 1885, the shortage being mainly on the Columbia and Sacramento. The outlook for the 1886 pack it is as yet impossible to figure upon, but it is pro- bable that Alaska may come to the front, with larger supplies than usual. A year ago the price of salmon was down to 90¢, while the market is now firm at $1 024 to $105, with very little old stock on hand. Firm prices and a clear market Induce renewed activity in this season’s salmon trade.— Bradstreets.

The Angle Trisected.
Sir,—-I see in yesterday's issue of THe EXAMINER, an intended solution of the pro- blem to trisect an angle, which I consider is not correct. The solution fails in the assumption that arcs of a circle are to one another as their chords, for if two equal arcs be taken contiguous to one another, they will be cut off by equal chords ; but if a chord be drawn to the whole are it will not be double of one of the smaller chords, because any side of a triangle is less than

Why Chamberlain Objects.
The following is a written statement by Mr. Chamberlain of his reasons for oppo- sing Mr. Gladstone’s measure :—
‘Mr. Gladstone's scheme for the disruption of the United Kingdom is not likely to commend it- self either in its principle or its details to demo- cratic sentiment. Its !eading idea is opposed to the tendency of the great movement, which, dur- ing the present century, has done so much to obliterate differences and distinctions, and weld together communities and nations in closer bonds of amity and interest. United Italy and United Germany constitute a silent protest against an attempt to split into fragments the present organ- ization of the United Kingdom. The principle of federation, triumphantly vindicated by the democracies of America and the Swiss repub- lic, and successfully imitated in the internal gov- ernment of the Dominion of Canada, has been re- cognized asthe means whereby imperial unity can be conciliated with local independence. Mr. Gladstone, however, has shown upon many occasions, and conspicuously in his utterances at the time of the American civil war, that he is pre- pared to carry decentralization to extreme limits, and that he 8 without enthusiasm the idea ot Imperial unity, coupled, as it must always be, with Imperial responsibilities and obligations. But, if in bis conception of national duty he is op-

These are the necessary concom!- tants of his proposal, and the plan must stand condemned as much on account of the anomalies which it brings in its train as from its own inher- ent defects. The more carefully it is studied the more probable it is that neither in the United Kingdom, nor on the continent of Europe, nor in America will it receive the general approval of the Radical party.”
