A resident of northern Saskat- chewan tested the strength of his teeth once too often. Opening o. bottle of homebrew with them the gas and froth rose so quickly it blew the bottle top dovm his throat. He recovered after an operation.

In Winnipeg: Crawling under the bed after an elusive tollar-button a. man's chest was pierced by a needle lying on the carpet. He died within a few clays and a postmort- em revealed the needle-point had worked inwards until it rcochcd the heart.

Hans Christian Andersen was himself the ugly duckling which miraculously turned into a awen. For did he not begin his career as a boorish and terribly ignorant youth and end it as the king of tellers of fairy stories? Many . of his renowned fairy tales were in- spired by incidents in his own life. He was born at Odenee in Den- mark in 1805. His father was a sickly shoemaker of 22; his mother was still younger, and they were so poor that the family lived and slept in one room. Hans received little education, for after his fa- ther's death in i816 the boy was left to his own devices. He uaeed to go to school. and eat at home making clothes for the puppets of the toy theatre he had constructed and voraclously reading all the plays he could borrow.

He was supremely ugly oven as a boy, but his beautiful voice and his talent for poetry attracted con- siderable attention, and when his relatives wanted him to become a tailor, Hans decided that he was fitted for something better than that. I-lis ambition qulckened by the praises of admirers in hie lit- tle native town, where he was known as "the comedy-writer," he went to Copenhagen, with designs on the theatre.

His first play was returned with the blunt intimation that "it showed such a want of elementary education on every page that it was absurd to expect any audience to tolerate it."

Next he tried to become a pro- fessional singer, but his unprepos- sessing appearance, his lack of personality and poise. made a stage career impossible. For a. time he nearly starved. Then two musi- cians befricnded him, and even- tually he was admitted to the school attached to the Royal The- atre as a. dancing pupil. The di- rector, Jones Collin, recognized the inherent abilities of the youth and became his patron and lifelong friend. An application to the king procured him a course of educat- ion at a famous gralnmar school at the public expense.

Collin would not let him leave school until he was 22. These years, Hans Andersen used to lay, were the darkest and bitterest in his life. The success of his early poem: once more turned his thoughts to literature. Besides, had not a Wise Woman predicted his future from an examination of the grouts in a coffee cup? Now, a tall, lanky. oddly-dressed young man. he pro- ceeded to search for patrons with an ingenious egotiem and re- source that amused and ﬂattered his victims into surrender.
