The president, Dr. McKay, of Summerside, in his closing speech, showed clearly and forcibly the great benefit both to the protession and the public. that would accrue from this and ether reunions, by which ideas were interchanged, friendships made and ill feelings discouraged. He read letters of regret from the Attorney-General, the leader of the Opposition, and several other gentlemen for their inability to attend. After singing ‘Auld Lang Syne,” the company dispersed feeling mutually benefitted.

** Rev. Dr. Thompson, a well-known Island. er, who for 2] years:has labored as a Presby- terian Minister in Washington State, on the Pacific coast, lectured Wednesday evening at Zion Church. The Doctor is well able to speak on the snbject, being thoroughly identi. tied with the State, having being elected for a term to the Legislative Council of the Terri- tory, ot which Conncil he was President. His subject was, ‘‘ Twenty-one years in the North- west Mission Field.” The speaker was called away from Halifax twenty-one years to labor at Oly mpia, the capital city of the St.te and twenty-one years ago on the day he de. livered his lecture he had arrived there to commence his labors. In those days about 50 000 people inhabited the Territory ; to-day 500,000 people are counted as citizens of the State Cities like Tacoma and Spokane Falls of 40,000 and 25,000 inhabitants have sprung up where there was nothing existed but un. broken wilderness, It was of vast importance that the spiritual welfare of this people should be cared for A country so great in extent and sparsely settled, was of necesgi y largely destitute of the ordinances of religion. Str,—Dr. McLeod is reported in your issue of yesterday in his address before the Medical Association to have said respect- ing the case of Sellers vs. Dr. Toombs, re- cently determined in the County Court, that the decision of the judge was made on unsound premises and that there was no precedent for such «decision, andthat the report of the case as published in Tue Ex- AMINER was inisleading and a misrepresen-
tation of the facts. I had nv hand in THe EXAMINER'S report, buti read it, and not- withstanding Dr. McLeod's assertion, |
know that it was true, and not misleading, and not in any sense a misrepresentation cf the facts. The trial of this case continued for seven days, and during the whole of that time l attended as Sellers’ attorney and think I ought tu know at any rate as much of the facts as Dr. McLeod, who was in the Court but a short time one day giv-
ing his evidence. It is certainly amusing to find such an emphatic condemnation of the Judge’s decision
given at a meeting of the Medical Associa- tion, when if there was anything wrong with that decision it could be righted by an appeal to the Supreme Court. Dr. Toombs had able counsel, the Hon. F. Peters, re- presenting him in the County Court, and if any injustice was done his counsel would assuredly provide for him that relief which an appesl from a wrong decision always gives. The decision in Toombs’ case war, I believe, arrived at after careful consider- ation, and the judgement bearing on the case, in my Opinion, was a good and sound judgment, and to have it 90 emphatically condemned by a gentleman who can know nothing of the facts, except what he learned from a one-sided version, goes a long way to strengthen the objections of Dr. Taylor to the Medical Bill recently before the House of Assembly, in that it made pro- visions for constituting a court compused (f doctors having authority to determine who should or should not practice medicine inthis Pr v nee. The de: s in is without
precedent, siys the judg.’s reviewer. Are we _ to infer that the * con- duct which the decision was in-
tended to remedy was witheut precedent ? I do not say so, but the Do tor's “asse:tion would leave this as a proper infercnce to draw. There are no wrongs without a rem- edy, and courts exist to righS wrongs as they arise, and if new weongs come tu the surface surely the Doctor dees not expect the courts to tarn aside just because the case a8 presented never occurred before. This is not the way | trust our doctors treat new forms of disease.
