OTTAWA (OP) — Repeal of 1958 Ontario legislation enlarging the franchise in ~municipal elec- tions was asked Tuesday by the Ontario Municipal Association at

its annual convention. .

' The association adopted a re- solution to this effect from its town and village section with little discussion.

The legislation is the Municipal Franchise Extension Act, which would extend the vote to all. per- sons of the age of 21 who are native or naturalized British sub- jects and who have lived in a community 'a year before an elec: tion.

At present, the franchise gen- erally is confined to householders. The new legislation is permissive, leaving it to individual municipal- ities to hold plebiscites on the question.

In the event the bill is not re- pealed, the OMA asked that new voters be made to register with municipal clerks, rather than have a house~to house enumera-

tion.

The resolution seeks repeal on the ground that the vote would be extended to persons not di- rectly responsible for taxation.

In the well of the hollowed-out landing ship, some 400 Nationalist Chinese replacements stirred and looked in apprehensiver at the sky. Aweatk moon was‘breaking through the clouds. They could not see the beach flmm below. On the catwalk deck above the Well we waited for the smalle landing- cralflt to sidle up. It could carry nearly 100 men, but it looked nuxghty small and awfully unprotected.

We dropped the equipment and prepared to jump, but a' swell carried the landing craft out of reach. Before the next roller could bring it back the coxswain gunned his motor and swung away in a large circular sweep.

We hung on the net that three or four minutes convinced he would complete the circle and we could get aboard. We never saw the landing craft again.

We climbed baclf up and stood on the catwalk trying to convince each other that the landing cratl't would come back for us and the 60 to 30 soldiers Scheduled to go in with the same boat. . . SEVERAL CASUALTIES

Meanwhile, the blackness sur- rounding us had come alive with gun fire. Red motor torpedo boa-ts fought a running battle with the armed patrol boats that had es- corted our troop ship.

Tracer shell-s blazed red streaks through the air. Some shells ex- ploded with sharp cracks near us but the troop shipwasnot hit.

Later, officers aboard told us six or eight torpedo boats ,had executed a two-provnged pincer at tack. against our small flotilla and that two torpedo boats had been sunk. One of the ships that had. been escorting us was damn aged and was taken under tow. It had at least three or foul" casualties, perhaps more.

Nova Scolian Is ReimancIecI For One Week

A 28-year-old Liverpool, Nova Scotia man was remanded for one week yesterday when he appear- ed in City Police Court to face three charges. He is charged with the theft of $15 from a Grafton street resident, attempting, by fraud, to obtain $30 from a Queen Street beauty salon and obtain, by fraud, goods valued at $10 from a local millinery store.

A Bvrackley Point Road man was meted a fine of $75 and costs or 30 days when he pleaded guilty to a charge‘of having the care and control of a motor vehicle while impaired. The 33-year-old man was originally charged with care (and control while intoxicated The fine draws an automatic three, months suspension of the driver’s license of the. accused.

A 68-year-old city resident with no fixed address will spend the next 10 days at the expense of the Queen’s County Jail. He was con victed of vagrancy. . ' The major portibn of this morn- ing’s 18~case docket that faced Acting Stipendiary Magistrate Allison Gillis were the‘ ever-pre- sent charges of drunk and incap- ables along with several traffic violators. . Drunk and incapable charges drew fines of $10 and costs or five days to residents of Dorchester Street, Water Street, Monoton, N,B., Parkdale, two each from King and Prince Street and one of no fixed address.
