An Offending Molar ts Driven Out With a Hatehet and a Big Nail.
“While traveling in Georgia a few months ago,” sai-! Attorney George W. W. MeNair in the San Francisco Post, “I saw a beau- tiful piece of dental surgery. A team- ster developed a toothache while on the road. He thought it would soon be better, but it kept getting worse, till he could hardly handle the reins. He put a chew of tobacco on it, but it only jumped the harder. Then he stopped his team, built a little fire, heated a needle red hot, and had an- other teamster jam it down into the cavity to kill thenerve. Still it jumped and thumped till the poor fellow was pretty nearly insane.
** “Boys, she’s got to come out,’ he shouted to his companions as he pulled up his team.
“They ail stopped, wound their lines around their brakes and climbed down.
“How can we get her out,” asked one of them.
"I don’t know,’ groaned the vic- tim, ‘but she’s got to come.’
He opened the jockey box on his seat and rummaged around in it, finally producing a small hatchet and a big nail,

I guess you'll have to drive her out with this,” said he, and he sat down on the ground and hung on toa buckeye bush with both hands, while one of his companions placed the end of the nail against the side of the tooth and hit with the hatchet. The first lick made the teamster jump and yell, but he settled down for another one. The second stroke loosened it up, and after a lot of groaning the teamster wiped the perspiration off his face, climbed onto the buckeye and said:—
** *Hit her again, boys.’
“The third lick sent the offending molar flying.”

The Chicago Record prints a story touching the slownoess—real or imputed— of Englishmen in catching the point of a joke. A party of traveling men were taiking about phonographs aa they sat about the hotel fire.
“IT heard an amusing story about an eld farmer the other day,’’ said one of them.
‘Interest always attaches to the doings of the agricultural classes,’’ said the Englishman, hitching up his chair with a look of interest.
‘*The farmer had just driven into town with his mules to sell a load of pump- kins, and stopped in front of the phono- graph store.
‘“What air them fellows doin’ in there with spouts in their ears?’’ he asked. ‘““Thoss are talking-machines,’’

At first the Englishman looked anx- lous, as if he expected to hear the rest of
the story. Then suddenly he burst out laughing.

Free Current.
Many electric power stations are greatly exercised over the fuct that not a few of the business houses and manufacturing places in their vicinity obtain their elec- tricity for light and power purposes with- out paying for it. The free discussion of the way tn which the pipes running un- der many city streets have been honey- combed and destroyed by the electrolytic action of the stray currents from trolley lines has taught the public that where electric roacs are operated there is plenty of current, as it were, lying around loose, and the next idea that naturally presents itself is to turn it to account. Any elec- trician can, fora few dollars, make the required connection, and the electric com- panies have no case against the man who does it. It is not like tapping a gas main, for the electricity is taken from the ground, and not from the eempany’s wires. All along the line of electric roads in large offtes are numberless pipes, which, being good sonductors, are sought by the stray electricity. Water pipes are
| particularly susceptible, as water itself is
a@ good condnactor. To utilize the current itis only necessary to attach wires toe motor and a very efficient power is ob- tained without expense. It is also said

The elephant and the whale have heavier brains than man; the mole and certain small apes and singing birds have heavier brains in pro} to the weight of the body than man. Accord- ing, however, to Prof. Ranke, the weight of the brain in proportion te the weight of the spinal cord is greater in man than in any other animal.

A Malay Girl’s Life.
At evening, when the fierce sun went down behind the green banian tree that nearly hid Mount Pulei, the khateeb would sound the call to prayer ona hollow log that hung up before the little palm-thatched mosque. Then Busuk and her playmates would fall on their faces, while the holy man sang in a soft, monotonous voice the promises of the Koran, the men of the campong answering. ‘*Allah il Allah,” he would sing, and *‘Mohammed is his prophet,” they would answer.
Every night Busuk would lie down on a mat on the floor of the house with a little wooden pillow under her neck, and when she dared she would peep down through the open spaces in the bamboo floor into the darkness beneath. Once she heard a low growl. and a great dark form stood right below her. She could see its tail lashing its sides with short, whiplike movements. Then allthedogs in the campong began to bark, and the men rushed down their ladders screaming ‘‘Harimau! Hari- mau!” (A tiger! A tiger.) The next morning she found that her pet dog, Fatima, named after herself, had been killed by one stroke of the great beast’s paw. Once a monster python swung from a cocecanut tree through the win- dow of her home and wound itself round and round the post of her mother’s loom. It took a dozen men to tie a rope to the serpent’s tail and pull it out.
So the days were passed in the little campong under the gently-swaying cocoanuts, and the little Malayan girl grew up like her companions, free and wild, with little thought beyond the morrow. That some day she was to be married she knew, for since her first birthday she had been engaged to Ma- mat, the son of her father’s friend, the punghulo of Bander Bahru,
Trastworthy Men.
Let it once be understood that a man is strictly trustworthy, that he can be counted on in all the ordinary emer- gencies of life, and confide nce and un- limited credit are within his reach. Many aman has a reputation of far greater value than a bank deposit, for that, by some accident, may be de- stroyed and diverted from its legitim- ate purpose, but the name is a guaran- tee for all its owner promises. In years past, when value had a more fixed standard, when there was less specu- lation and not so much of what is called ‘‘trading upon paper,” as at present, the statement that a man’s word was as good as his bond was more common than it is nowadays. To have this said of a man, especially one who is comparatively young, is the greatest compliment that can be paid him.

““Why so?” she inquired with mild surprise.
‘Because it will decay them. Some take iron in capsules, but I think by taking it through a straw it will be all right.”
**Well, now, doctor, suppose I should leave my teeth upstairs, while I take the iron in the kitchen, do you think there would be any danger?”
