The Doctor said that with cold weather only a few weeks away, it was very unlikely that there would be-any cases develop in the Province.

Sask. May Take liver Strike-bound Packing Plants

Saskatchewan Government may take over strike-bound meat plants in the Prairie Province.

Under a plan discussed by the cabinet during the week-end, the report said, the plants would be operated by Union workers, the Saskatchewan Government offer- ing to meet Union demands for higher wages.

He made that clear today when he visited Montreal for Founder's Day ceremonies at McGill Univer- sities and with good-natured deft- ness parrled queries from news- paper reporters.

Exciting reporters at the time was a story from Quebec that, af- ter attending Princess Elizabeth's November wedding in London, Mr. King would return to Canada and present his resignation-“one of his first tasks," at that time, so the story went-as leader of the Liberal Party to the National Liberal Association.

The information was reported to have reached Quebec from “ex- cellent sources" and it went on to say that "just on the eve of that session (the 1948 session of Par- liament) Mr. King will step down from active management of the country's affair and Rt. Hon. Louis St. Lauren will be- acting Prime Minister during the 1048 session.”

That was on July 80 and police didn't locate him until Sunday. He was remanded for sentence on break-in and theft.

The train from Charlottetown had just arrived at the station, with its headlights illuminating the wharf,‘ when a stranger was observed by Messrs. Weldon Lav- ers. Earl MacLaren, Richard Douqan, train engineer and Jack MacKinnon, fireman, pass along the station platform going down the Rarlwaywharf. Mr. Dougan, curious about the‘ man's actions, suggested that Lavers and Mac- Laren watch the man. They saw him walk down the wharf as far as the potato shed, which is lo- cated some distance along the wharf, where he stopped to speak to some children, and then start- ed back up the wharf. .

Shortly after that the man dis- appeared from sight, and when the two watching men realized this they ran out on the wharf with a flashlight and a few min- ates later, located the man float- ing in the water close to the wharf. The engine crew arrived with a long rake taken from the cab, and after considerable diffi- culty, managed to hook it into his clothing, and haul hlln up on the wharf where artificial res- piration was employed at once.

No identification was found on the victim, other than a bus ticket stub of the Irving Bus Line, stamped Pictou to PEI. and a small sum of money.

An inquest has been ordered by Coroner Inman. to be held at Georgetown on Tuesday, October 9, at 2 p.m. and a jury has been lmpanneled.

The jurors are as follows: Ashley Allen (foreman), J. A. B. McConnell. W. J. Fitzgerald, F. J. DeLory, '1‘. L. Boudreault, L. H. Douglas and A. H. Stewart, all of Georgetown.

City Police said that in connec- tion with the drowning in Geome- town they had been asked by R.C.M.P. whether they know of a pat, Cosway. City authorities said they had never heard of the name here.

Small Rescue Craft Making Long Voyage

Inquest 0pens Into iieath 0f Bediord Woman

A coroner's jury with William Flynn as foreman was sworn in last night by Coroner Dr. I. J,. Yeo to inquire into the death of Mrs. Fenton Court. 40, Bedford. who died early yesterday after- noon at the Prince Edward Is- _and Hospital.

The late Mrs. Court was struck by a car last Sunday afternoon near the Redford rallwaymtatlon. -and wnsplmmedlateiy rutlfed by ‘ambulance to the hospital.

After the body of the late Mrs. Court was viewed last night at the Macbean Funeral Home, Dr. Yeo announced the inquest was adjourned until 7.30 tomorrow (Wednesday) evening.

Other members of the jury are Major MacKenzie, W. M. Forsythe, Hawley Crockett, Harry Hardy, W. A. Rix and William Hughes.

Strikes Tie lip 12 Montreal Shoe Plants

MONTREAL, Oct. 8 - (CP)_ More than 1.000 employees of shoe manufacturers staged a work stoppage today to bolster their demands for a general 20-cenie- an-hour wage increase asked by their C.I.O. union, the Boot and Shoe Workers Union.

Twelve Montreal plants were affected and the men had no sooner started the stoppage than an official of the Quebec shoe Employers’ Association branded the move an "illegal strike."

This was so, he said, because the movement took place while nego- tiations on the shoe workers ds- mands were still in program. The employers’ spokesman was presi- dent Louls Daoust.

The union also asks an increase, equal to their QO-cents-‘bn-hour demand, for pieceworkers, a 4o- hour week, two weeks’ annual vacation, group insurance plans and union recognition in bargain- ing matters.

Beaver iiluh Surplus For Scholarships

LONDON, Oct., 6—(0P)—A sum of $120,000. left after the famous wartime Beaver Club closed, will provide scholarships at British Universities for Canadian ex-ser- vicemen and their sons, it was learned today.

The fund will provide 15 or 20 scholarships in the next five years as well as adding $16,000 to sup- plement grants made by the Can- adian Department of Veterans Affairs to ex-servicemen studying in Europe.

Heavy Fire Loss Last y Night At North Rustico”

The-re was no official estimate of the amount of the loss but it was reported that it would probably be close to $20,000.

The business was operated by Mr. ll. Murray Cassidy, formerly of Chatham, N.B. He was stationed st North Rustlco for a time during the war with am R.C.A.F. sea res- :cue unit, operated Ln conjunction with the three air training stations in the Province. After the war he set up business for himself anc: built a new building and fitted 1i. up with modern furnishings.

City firemen were called out about 10.20 p.m. when the people at North Rustico became alanmed that the large Stella Maris School, close to the blazing restaurant, would, be lost. A bucket brigade was formed and kept the chool walls wet until City equipment arrived. By iihat time, however. much of the danger had passed.

_ Firemen Return
