English literature and fashions exercise 4 paramount influence in §the sister Isle, just as they do in Halifax, and more, perhaps, than they do in St. John, in which Bosten and New York unite with London and Paris in in- fluencing the secial and intellectual tastes of our people. A variety of social aspects and sentiments is thus produced, fitted to add zest to a visit such as that which has been made. Then the physical aspect of the Island and character and extent of its agricultural, fishing and other industries must have proved matters of interest to the distinguished visitors, The trip to Rusticc, which is so charmingly situated, must have proved a most enjoyable one, and seems to have been admirably arranged and carried out. We have not,we think,misinterpreted the tastes of our readers, and least of all of the lady readers ef the 7'elegraph, in infer- ring that they would like to hear all about the doings of the Governor General in Prince Edward Island, and of the move- ments of the Princess, whom they so often called ‘“charming,” while she was in St. John. We have therefore given many par- ticulars of the visit to the Island, and of the way in which its fair daughters bore themselves on that occasion. As we are not often called upon to chronicle such events, the appearance among us of a Princess Royal, being like angel visits, few and far between, few of our readers will grudge the space which we have given to the closing events of the trip. Now that the represent- ative of the Telegraph has seen the dis- tinguished visitors eff in the Druid yester- day morning, the curtain drops on the Vice- Regal trip to the Maritime Previnces. (From the Sun.) THE REASON WHY.

it is said that the canse of the Governor General and the Princess remaining on board the Druid at Charlottetown, instead of takiny up quarters in Government Hoase, was a dispute between the Lieut. Governor and the Provincial Government as to who should pay the expenses of preparing the house for their reception. What we do not understand is how His Excellency could know, ‘‘officialiy,” anything about such a dispute, if any existed ; and even if it came tu his knowledge, how he could take notice of it. That Government House was pre- pared in good style for their Excellencies’ reception, and that they were invited to its hospitalities, are facts ; and that they would have been heartily welcomed is not to be doubted fora moment. It is a subject for regret that frem whatever cause, the dis- tinguished visitors remained on the steamer, especially as the Princess’ health appears to have suffered from the motion of the vessel in the harbor.

Prorogation of Parliament.

Parliament was prorogued on the 15th inst. The speech from the throne was as follows: My Lords and Gentlemen, | am happy to be able to relieve you from your laborious duties. My relations with the other powers continue cordial, and my in- fluence with them will be employed in maintaining the obligations imposed by treaties, promoting and consolidating pub- lic peace. The territorial arrangements stipulated in the treaty of Berlin has been faithfully executed, and delineation of the new frontiersis nearly completed. The Balkan peninsula has been evacuated by the Russian Army in accordance with the treaty, and under unanimous sanction of signatory powers. . Suitable provision has been made for the Government of Rou- melia. I have, with great satisfaction, given iny sanction to the election of a Prince ‘of Bulgaria. Calamities of late war have hitherto precluded the adoption of those reforms by the Government of which it has acknowledged necessity. I have urged and shall urge the importance of timely com- pliance with its engazements in this respect. At the suggestion of my Government in conjunction with that of France a change has taken place in Vice-Royalty of Egypt which past mis-government in that country rendered necessary.
