Battap Concert.—lIt is to be regretted that there was not a larger attendance at Mr. Williams’ benefit concert in the Ly- ceum last evening. The programme was very lengthy, and was well carried out— almost every number being encored.
Tre Suort Live.—The whole lengtn of the Short Line branch of the 1. C. R. from Ox- ford to Pictou is 67 miles, and the Pugwash branch is 5 miles—a total of 72 miles. It has cost the Government up to January Ist, 1889, for old claims against the Short Line Com- pany $149,133 and for construction and equip- ment, $1,061,179, making a total expenditure on this line of $1,150,412

Divorce.—In response to a motion of Mr. Gladstone, the divorce statistics of England have been brought down in the shape of a parliamentary return. With these facts be- fore him Mr. Gladstone has written to Mr. Gemmill, of Ottawa, acknowledging the latter's work on divorce, and saying: ‘1 think it highly probable that the Canadian system, of which I had not previousiy been aware, isthe best as being attended with the least danger.” ‘This is significant.

Srruck sy Ligutninc.—During the thun- der storm on Sunday evening last the residence of John C. McNeill, of West River, was struck by lightning in the roof, tearing off the saddle-board and some shingies. . The lightning entered the house, destroying some of the plaster, window casings, &e. Providen- tially, however, tne inmates, who at the time oceupfed the sitting-soom, which received the most damage, escaped uninjured, except re- ceiving asevere shock, which was felt by all in the house.

Hitt AND OFFICERS. — Captain Hill, of che steamship Helifax, which plied between here and Boston last season, was presented with an address dur- ing a recent trip, by the passengers, ex- pressing their appreciation of the kindness and attention they had received at his hands during the trip. It also expressed the hope that Captain Hill and the officers and crew of the Halifax would be spared to make the service prosperous and te make their friends happy. Captain Hill made a very suitable reply, thanking them for the encouragement they had given the Canada Atlantic Line.

They went to California by the Southern Pacific, followed the coast northwar! to Victoria and Van- couver, came throurh the Rockies and over the Provinces to" Winnipeg, and thence by way of St. Paul, Chicago, Boston, etc.—a splendid trip.

No government save that of the war department exists. There is reason to fear, therefore, that much bloodshed wil! result from the general tur- moil. The scenes in Oklahoma to-day are without parallel. The sudden turning of an uninhabited country into a country teeming with people is a unique incident in the country’s history.

This morning the military officers on the northern border gave instructions to the boomers to form close to the Uklahoma line. At noon the signal was given, and witha mighty cheer the Oklahoma army rushed forward intothe promised land. On the east- ern, fsouthern and western; borders the same scenes were enacted. Horses were goaded to the utmost speed in the grand rush. Thousands crossed the line in one minute.

Prohibition Defeated. Boston, April 22.
To-day the people of Massachusetts vot- ed on the constitutional prohibition amend- ment, and gave it a crushing defeat. The amendment was: The manufacture and eale of intoxicating liquors to be used asa beverage are prohibited. The defeat wasa crushing one, not only in this city, but in State. The majority against it in the was 30,000, and the vote in the State against it, 132,944; in favor of it, 83,392,
