King K-a-l-a-ka-u’s dominions are not, it would seem, overstocked with industri- ons poople. During his trip around the world he endeavored to promote imtmigra- tion to the Hawaiian Islands. He wants more subjects—people who will work—and ihese he expects shortly to, have. He pro- poses also to light up the islands generally with electric lights. His Majesty expects to be in Honolulu about October 25.

Equinoctial Gales.

Usually we have heavy “ equinoctial yales,” though this year they have not been so pronounced as they h&ve been in former years. Some weather prophets af- fect to believe there is no such thing as

!equinoctial tempests due to the sun’s cross-

ing the line. But no fact in meteorology is better established. The withdrawal of solar radiation from the. Arctic regions at the autumn equinox Jeaves about eight million equare miles of the earth’s surface to throw off 14s heat into space and to cool down rapidly. The polar areas thus be- comes a vast refrigerator, the cold waves from which descending upon our latitudes condense the loads of vapor suspended over them, generating our severest storms.
