Recital By Dr. Karem J. Simon on November 3 in Steel Hall

What could be more enjoyable than a frustrating Senate meeting? A discussion about the recent name change of the University newspaper? A cry for help from smokers freezing in the October winds? The answer: a clarinet recital!

On Friday, November 3, at the Dr. Steel Recital Hall, Dr. Karem J. Simon of the Music Department is giving a faculty recital for the public. For those of you dozing during that all-important board meeting or others fed up with people who ask too many questions in class, come to the recital at eight o’clock and settle in your seats to enjoy some fantastic clarinet repertoire.

Dr. Simon, a native of Newfound- land, received his Masters in perform- ance at Northwestern University in Chicago, and his D.M.A. at the Univer- sity of British Columbia. He taught public school for ten years in Corner Brook, Newfoundland before coming here to UPEI to teach Applied Music, Secondary Music Education, Orchestra- tion, and several other courses. This is his fifth year at the Music Department, and within that short period of time Dr. Simon has given five fantastic recitals.

I decided to ask the professor how he could manage to successfully perform five recitals, work on his sixth, teach several courses and ensembles, and take care of his family all at once. Being a very organized man with important objectives in mind, Dr. Simon manages his time well. He believes that perform- ance is important because it maintains and even enhances the skills already achieved through years of learning about music. Plus, a recital is a big incentive to practice!

Dr. Simon will be performing with his wife, Ruth Simon, who has her Bachelor of Music and Bachelor of Education from Mount Allison Univer- sity. She currently teaches clarinet privately. The duo will be performing ‘*Sonata for Two Clarinets’’ by Francis Poulenc, Dr. Simon on the Bb clarinet and Ruth Simon on the A clarinet. For those with some knowledge of music,

this means that the two clarinets sound a minor second apart, and should lead to an exciting piece to hear.

Dr. Simon will also be performing with another faculty member from the Department of Music. Dr. Frances Gray will be playing piano for several of the pieces on the programme. She has been teaching at UPEI and privately for a number of years and has performed numerous recitals. Dr. Gray has a considerable amount of musicianship and will give credibility to this recital. The three pieces the pair will be per- forming are ‘‘Grand Duo Concertante”’ by C.M. von Weber, ‘‘Six Studies in English Folk-Song’’ by Ralph Vaughan Williams, and Claude Debussy’s “*Premiére Rhapsodie’’. With such a wide range of repertoire spanning over the past two hundred years, the pro- gramme will truly illustrate the great works composed for the clarinet.

The only piece not mentioned, however, is one to be performed by Dr. Simon alone. This piece, a very techni- cally and musically demanding work, was composed by Libby Larson and just published in 1994. The work, ‘‘Dancing Solo’’, has four movements titled as ‘‘with shadows’’, ‘‘eight to the bar’’, “in ten slow circles’’, and ‘‘flat out’’. The four movements are to be thought of as different dances and dancing tech- niques, thus giving the audience member something to ponder as he or she listens to this contemporary composition. I have had the fortunate chance of hearing “Dancing Solo,’’ but am looking for- ward to the final product and the audi- ence’s response at Friday night’s per- formance!

As you ponder about what to do Friday night, when you really should be teaching the class how to dissect the latest thing found in the bushes, think of pleasing your senses and drop by the Dr. Steel Recital Hall at eight o’clock. A five dollar ticket for adults and a two © dollar one for students and seniors will give you a comfortable seat to relax in. Perhaps you can push aside your latest wolties so as to enjoy a recital featuring

excellent musicians working off some steam of their own!

CIMIN Shows its Stuff

The DJs at CIMN want to get out news about their shows before we go open air FM in January 1996. To do so, some DJs are putting up posters to publicize their shows, while others are looking for companies to advertised during their airtime: Over the next few issues of the Panther Prints, CIMN is encouraging its DJs to submit a small description of their shows to let our listeners know what the buzz is all about. If you are interested in what you see, tune in at 104.5 (cable) FM at home, or in the Pit. Starting January 1996, we will be moving to 90.3 FM, so you should be able to pick us up throughout the Charlottetown area. Check us out!

Is there a Berveridge calling you?

If you are looking for a ‘‘cool Beveridge’’, you can find one on CIMN. There are only 40 top artists on the charts and I don’t play any of them. CIMN is dedicated to playing music from artists that are not on the top 40, and there is a lot of talent out there. Some examples that you may have heard of are Thrush Hermit, Strawberry, and Cool G and Special Sauce. To go with the great music on the show there are always contests for great prizes. So tune into CIMN 104.5 (cable) FM and soon you’ ll be able to hear us on 90.3 FM after Jan 96. The Beveridge Show, Fri and Sat from 1:00-3:00 pm each week.
