In six years the *‘ extravagant” Sir John added say $36,- 000,000 to the public debt, but made the Dominion. But in five years Mr. Mac. kenzie added say $45,000,000, and nearly rumed the Dominion.

THE TRADE OF CANADA.

UNDER SIR RICHABD.

In his budget speech in 1878 Sir Richard Cartwright made the following open con- fession: ‘‘Making allowance for the admis- sion of P. E. Island into the Union, the total volume of the trade and commerce of Canada had in that short interval been re- duced by very nearly $50,000,000, while the revenue derived from Customs alone exhibits a decrease in that period of some- thing like $3,000,000--the actual figures in tound numbers showing that the volume of our trade and commerce collectively has been reduced

Mr. Laizp attended the examination of Prince of Walos College and Normal School, and made. some exceedingly com- plimentary remarks about the improvement apparent in the school]—the increased at- tendance, the co-education of the sexes, etc. It was to the judicious change made by the Local Government —a change which was most sirenuouely opposed by the poli- tical friends of Mr. Laird—that the im- provement is largely due. It is to be re- gretted that the Ex-Governor hadn't spoken ‘in this way before the Election. If he had | Hon. Mr. McLeod might not now be fight- ing for his seat.
