A Cry Ter Reform.

Srr,— We have just arisen from a con- test, the keenest, I believe, in cur political history, and although weeks have elapsed since the grand conflict, both parties still seem to stand scowling at each other over the heads of the people and -crying™‘Vic- tory !—Victory !” The Press of the one side shouts out, beneath a glaring heading, that the greatest statesman of America, the ‘‘orand old chieftain,” Sir John, has again been returned to power with a handsome following, and we have scarcely had time to swallow this bit of information when we are called upon to listen to the rejoicings of Liberals over the fact that the reins have been snatched from the statesman of sev- enty-two. Telegrams are falsified, reports are garbled, and the genius of hundreds of minds is employed to blacken the fair face of truth. The Conservatives, it is said, are poKtically damned on account of their cor- rupt practices and wholesale bribery ; while, on the other hand, we are told that the Blake Party buys its support with the gold of Gloucester fish-merchants. After such a state of affairs as this, itis high time for the Press of Canada to begin the work of reform at home, and leave American corruption and bribery to be dealt with by the representatives at Washington. To the honor of the W ec kly Witness, of Montreal, it is due to say that its articles are consid- ered more accurate, in the main, than those of any journal with which | have had to do, and are believed to be, so far as com- plete impartiality can be secured, almost perfect in their way.

The submissive party thraldom in which so many of our public men are fettered is a slavery incompatible with the principles of patriotism, honesty and liberty. I would, therefore, like to see the WEEr ty Examt- NER engage in a conflict with this growing evil, for 1 know its influence would be felt throughout the length and breadth of the land, and then our fair Island would take as high a stand in political morality as it does in all the other virtues. Let these political contests be fought upon the merits of the case, upon princip's, and not upon such trifliug issues as a desire for change, a belief in the return of a certain party to power, for I solemnly believe ‘hat to other ae but thess are the i ‘heral party of

In a lecture recently delivers at Cana- johari, N. Y., the Hon. Chauncey, M. Depew thus describes a debate to which he had listened in the British House of Com- mons: —Sir Stafford Northcote started the ball by an indictment of the Government. Though usually the dullest of the speakers, this time he was so strong, direct and in- cisive that he made it exceedingly lively. Of course he skipped over all the merits like a lawyer presenting his side and bunch- ed in most glaring colors the defects. Mr. Gladstone rose to reply, and we all felt he knew the occasion demanded all his powers.

Coneert at Victoria.

A GRAND entertainment under the aus- pices of Onward Division, Sons of Tem- perance, was given in Brien’s Hall, Vic- toria, on Wednesday evening, the 9th inst. Long before the appointed hour teams might be observed approaching from all directions, and when the time for open- ing had arrived, a sea of pleasant faces could be seen in a densely crowded hall, all anxiously waiting in readiness to receive one of the greatest treats of the season. A carefully prepared programme of music— instrumental and vocal, readings recita- tions and dialogues greete | ‘he audience. The programme was 80 ranged for variety and suitability, for s lemnity and evity and amusement, that he audience was highly pleased with rendition, Much of the suecess was due tv the kindly interest and assistance of the ladies whose voices and fingers displayed so much innate ability in the performance of their various parts; but it is reedless to particularize where all did so well.

Victoria has long borne the reputation of being among the first places in the Province toatiend a concert. She still waves that banner and maintains that proud rank. After a lengthy programme had been ex- hausted the friends dismissed with their evenings enjoyment. The handsome sum of $34 was realized and many congratula- tions and well wishes ever bestowed upon the performers—Com.

In facility of speech, depth and breadth of information and powers of presentation | I do not believe he has an equal in the world. He knew that the French had outgeneraled him in the East, Bismarck had stolen a march on him in Australia and Africa, his Egyptian policy had ended in a fiasco, Gordon was shut up in Khartoum, and commerce and trade were in dreadful straits. His efforts were to ayoid meeting these issues and to create false one, and he did it magnificently. He attacked members of the Opposition fierce- ly and personally; he charged into every opening they offered. He was pathetic, eloquent, argumentative and sarcastic. The Conservative leaders tried their best to prevent the younger men from being tempted by him into side discussions and to confine him to a defence#f his mistakes.

But they failed, and the debate closed in a grand burst of oratory from the Premier, who had never touched a dangerous topic. As we left the House of Commons a Cana-
