After the intimation that an ad- ditional $40 million in equalization grants would be available to the At- lantic provinces under the new form- ula to be proposed by Ottawa at this week’s federal-provincial tax struc- ture committee conference, it comes as sobering news that once again, the fiscal-needs of this province are being bypassed with what would seem to be the utmost indifference by Fin- ance Minister Sharp and-his cabinet colleagues.

In a~statement issued Tuesday evening by Premier Campbell and

Provincial-Treasurer Hickey, our rep--

resentatives at the conference, it was ‘domplained that the formula now being considered adds only $400,- 000 to our: present tamsharing agree- ment. But even this appears to have been an over-optimistic estimate. Ac- cording to a Canadian Press release, it would seem that our incréased

share would be $200,000. Against .

this beggarly handout, Newfound- land would receive an extra $22,000,- 000 under the new formula, Nova Scotia $18,800,000, and New Bruhs- wick $15,700,000. Why we should be- fobbed off in the manner_above in- dicated, is beyond comprehension. Perhaps there are some details in the Sharp formula which have not

The standards will be based on 26 requirements established in the last two years for cars purchased by the federal government and on existing regulations of. the Interstate Com- merce Committee for trucks and buses. They range from impact-ab- sorbing steering columns to backup lights. Others include _ front-seat headrests to reduce neck injuries,~ comprehensive interior padding, rear-window defogging devices, re- cessed or break-away knobs and handles, minimum-glare interior and exterior surfaces and signalling de- vices for stopped vehicles.
