Slight Fire At Queen's Co. Jail

seven prisoners were hurriedly evacuated from the top storey of Queen's County Jail on Saturday night when an alarm of fire was sounded by the inmates and heard by jailor Simpson as he worked about the garden surrounding the building. The Fire Department re- sponded at 7.10 p.m.. when the blaze gave all indications of be- coming serious.

The fire is said to have started in a small closet in the hallway where cleaning materials are kept and the packing paper taken from several new mattresses was temp- orarily stored. The prisoners were unable to reach the ground floor by the usual route, and were evac- uated through that part of the premises occupied by the jailor.

City and Mounted Police took charge of the prisoners as they left the building. and there was no disorder. Three other prisoners in he basement were removed with- out ditficulty. The cause of the fire has not yet. been determined.

1.200 Girl Guides Go Under Canvas Hear Ottawa

CONNAUGHT R.lI"l.E RANGES. South March, Oni.. July is ICP) -Some 1.200 happy teen-agcd Girl Guides from most parts of Canada tomorrow will take over this site 15 miles southwest of Ottawa which normally is used for male rifle competitions.

The girls will spend 12 days uii- der canvas at this camp. largest ever undertaken by the Girl Guides Association.

The Guides. ranging in age. from 13 to 16. were hand-picked by the Girl Guides Association on the basis of individual merit and pre- vious camping experience. Instead of trying to train the girls in camping and life-saving techniq- ues. an effort will be made to teach them the finer points of cit- izenshlp.

The camp was designed to help the youngsters to think as Canad- ians. not as the natives of any particular province.

They will be assembled in Pro- vinces, each Province having a number of Guides based on the number of members of the move- ment in the Province.

After the opening ceremonies, the visitors will be asked to iii- spect some demonstrations of Guiding yvhicli will be dolie by a number of the campers. The dem- onstrations will include the (Iuidi-s' knowledge of how to deal with the emergencics will consist of cooking without utensils. providing shelter for the homeless. first aid for the injured and burned. etc.

As guests of the Canadians for thc period from .lilly 14 to 25 will be 26 girls from the lllllted States. the Dutch East Indies, Jamaica, Bermuda. Britain. Guadaloupe and St. Pierre and Miquclon.

The camp will be officially open- ed Tuesday by Prime Minister st. Laurent who will take the salute during the march past of the Guides by Provinces.

Plans for the camp were started two years ago by the national ex- ecutive of the Girl Guides Associ- atioii.

The girls will pay their own way and will have a staff of some 300 volunteers to oversee activities. The fee will be S60 no matter from what part of the country the Guides come.
