Smith, Biologi- cal Station, St. Andrew's, N.B., for his opinion on the sawdust question. Dr. Smith is rated among the leading trout biolo- gists in Canada. Dr. MacDonald received M. Smith's reply and that portion of the letter pertain- ing to sawdust is embodied here- under. : “Dear Dr. MacDonald: “T note from your letter March 25th that your Association has become interested in the old, but apparently ever new contro- versy concerning sawdust in na- tural waters. It continues to a rise, I suppose, because the sim- plest way for @ mill owner to get rid of his waste is to dump it in a stream and let the fellow) below worry about it. . It can be stated generally that | the dumping of sawdust into a stream is harmful to the life in it, including fish. The extent to which harm is done obviously de- pends upon the local situation.
