shift consisted of dismounting a 32 pounder gun down the rear on watered skids, taking it around a stake 30 feet in rear of the plat- ‘form, and then mounting it on the same carriage by parbuckling over the side on ‘two skils. The shift was done by the New |Brunswick Brigade in 11m. 13s., by the | Halifax Brigade in 7m. 32 2-5s., and by the |P. E. Island Brigade in 7m. 19s.

The “B” or go-as-you-please shift consisted of dismounting a gun from a carriage on platform and moving carriage to another platform about twenty feet to the left front and then mounting the gun on the carriage —time : New Brunswick brigade, 10 mit., Halifax brigade, 6 min. 22 2-5 sec; P. E. 1. brigade, 4 min. 23 sec. In this last shift, our artillery men did splendid work, as the detail of the shift was not known until the men arrived on the ground. The shooting of the team was also remarkably good—the prizes won being as follows :

The Jesuits Estates Act.

W. D. Tavron, of New Glasgow, N. §.,, addressed # meeting of Orangemen and others in the Orange Hal] here last evening, on the Jesuits Estates Bil. The lecturer spoke for about one hour on the different phases of the question, after which short addresses were given by several present. The following motion was carried unani- mously :—

Resolved, That this meeting condemn the action of the 188 members of Parliament who voted against the motion to disallow the Jesuits Estates Bill, and approve of the action ot the noble thirteen.

Rev. Mr. McNeill moved a vote of thanks to the lecturer, after which the meeting closed with ‘‘God Save the Queen.”

A BUDGET OF GENERAL NEWS FROM ALL PARTS OF THE WORLD.

Quesec, Sept. 29.—The inquest into the cause of the death of the victims of the re- cent disaster here has closed. The verdict says the deaths were the result of gross and culpable neglect on the part of the federal officers and the municipal authorities of Quebec. Erastus Wiman’s offer to sub- scribe to the relief fund was temporarily declined, as some $1,900 is still at the com- mittee’s disposition. The body of Richard Maybury, sr., was taken to-day from under the ruins.

Toronto, Sept. 30.—An old couple named Staunton, residing east of the Don, were drinking together, and on getting up in the morning Staunton announced his intention of killing himself. He went down stairs and hanged himself. His wife followed and cut him down, but got afraid and went away, and Staunton again at- tempted suicide with success,

Zanzipak, Sept. 30.—The blockade of the east African coast ends to-morrow. City or Mexico, Sept. 30.—Three young ladies of Morela, who lost their for- tunes at the gaming table, have committed suicide.

Burre, Mont., Sept. 30.—Three firemen were fatally injured inthe fire yesterday, and a number of others slightly injured. The total loss will not exceed $300,000. ATHENS, Sept. 30.—A mass meeting to- day resolved to appeal to the royalties at- tending the Duke of Sparta’s wedding for protection of christians in Crete.

Duewin, Sept. 30.—Subscriptions to the fund to meet the expenses of Parnell in the defence before the Parnell commission have closed. The total amount subscribed is £41,000.

Vienna, Sept. 30.—The Tremdenblatt says news from Crete is satisfactory. The Greek reports of wholesale arrests and atrocities are pure inventions.
