THE young Pieceptor mare Olive, which her owner, Mr. Benjamin Heartz, sent away to be bred last season to Alcantara, 2.23, dropped a filly foal not long since at Highlawn Farm, Lee, Mass., by this cele- brated son of George Wilkes and Alma Mater. Olive is only three years old, and her first foal, by one of the greatest sires of the day, should be valuable, as the Wilkes-Nutwood cross is proving to be one of the most successful in the production of sensational performers st an early age. The fastest performer by Nutwood is Man- ager with a three-year-old pacing record of 2.114, and his dam is Carrie, 2 29}, by George Wilkes, 2.22. Of other performers by Nutwood, inheriting Wilkes blood through their dams, I may mention Aegon, three-year-old record 2.18}, out of a daugh ter of Alcantara, son of George Wilkes; Flenview Belle (3 years) 2.204, is out of Melrose, daughter of George Wilkes W ilkeswood, 2.234, foaled in 1884 (aire of Fleety Wilkeswood, record at 3 years 2.28) is out of a George Wilkes dam. Nutwood sired other performers out of Wilkes dams which I do not recall just now. Then, again, daughters of Nutwood have produced ,erfermers of high merit by sires of Wilkes blood. Macleay, that took arecord last season as a two-year-oldof 2.22}, wassired by Sable Wilkes, 2.18, the great sun of Guy Wilkes, 2.15}, brother to William L., sire of Axtell (3 years) 2.12. The dam of Macleay is a Nutwood mare. Vida Wilkes, 2.18}, and Nutwood Wilkes (3 years) 2.20}, by Guy Wilkes, had Nutwood dams. Some of these are on the string of John Goldsmith, now on the eastern circuit, and are ex- pected to capture the heavy end of some of the big stakes. The science of breeding would indeed be at fault if early and ox- treme speed did not come from a combin- ation of blood of tne Wilkes and Nutwood lines.
The dam ot Olive is Maud, by All Right, and is owned by Mr, Heartz. Alcantara, 2.23, is a son of George Wilkes, 2.22, foaled in 1876. He is the sire of 38 pertormers from
3 | 2.134 to 2.30, and grandsire of 7 including
Prince Regent, 2.164 at five years, whose dam and granddam were both of Wilkes blood.
The dam of Alcantara is the great brood mare Alma Mater, still in the breeding ranks on the ranches of W. 8. Hobart, California. She is the dam of 5 2.30 performers, including Arbiter, 2 223, by Administrator, 357, and the full brothers Alcyone, 2.27, and Alcantara, 223. Her sire was Mambrino Patchen, 58, son of Mambrino Chief, 11. Mambrino Patchen was full brother to the famous Lady Thorn, 2.18}, that earned a name which shall live long in the annals of the trotting turf.

Her brother, Mambrino Patchen, although never a star of the race course, has won a name no less distinguished as a sire as his sons and daughters have fully demonstrated his breeding-on capacity. Fifty-two of his daughters have produced sixty-two perform- ers in the 2.30 list. And such performers :

As I have not seen lat-ly the rules of the
standard published in the Island papers, their publication may. be appreciated by those readers of THe ExaMINER whose in- terest is becoming awakened in the breeding and development of the trotting horse, which
is yearly becoming a respectable occupation. The following are the rules of the trotting standard :—
In order to define what constitutes a standard-bred trotting horse, and to establish a breed of trotters on a more intelligent basis, the following rules are adopted to control admission to registration. hen an animal meets the requirements of admission and is duly registered, it shall be accepted as a standard-bred trotting anima!.
Ist. Any trotting stallion that’ has.a record of two minutes and thirty seconds (2 30), or better; provided any of his get has s record of 2.35 trotting, or better; or provided his sire or dam is already a _standard trotting animal.
2d. Any mare or gelding that has a trotting record of 2.30, or better.
3d. Any horse that is the sire of two trotters with records of 2.30, or better.
4th. Any horse that is the sire of one trotter with a record of 2 30, or better, pro- vided he has either of the following additional qualifications: 1. A trotting record of 2.35, or better. 2. Is the sire of two other animals

The people of Lower Montague and vicinity were greatly shocked to hear of the death of William Meggatt, Esq , which sad event took place on Wednesday morning, June Ist, at the age of 46 years. Mr,
Meggatt was a native of Dumfriesshire, Scotland, and emigrated to this Island sbout five years ago, having accompanied C. C. Gardiner, Esq , on the voyage across the Atlantic. On arrival he was employed as farmer for Benj. Heartz, Esq , at his farm in Charlottetown Royalty, and sub- sequently filled a similar position with
Dr, Beer, thereby making himself acquaint- ed with the capitalists of this province.
Finding the result satisfactory, Mr. Meggett purchased the splendid farm at Lower Montague, formerly owned by Mr
James Phillips, and for the past two years has been successfully working on that piace, During his short residence among the people of Lower Montague the deceas
ed showed his many excellent qualitics, and last winter was elected President of the Lower Moutague branch of the Farmers Trading Associ»tion. The fatal illness only began on Friday last and was a violent form of pneumonia, with other complications.
The funeral ceremonies at the residence were conducted by the Rev. Mr. Spencer, of Montague, who made a feeling address on the merits of the deceased and the be- reavement of the widow and two daughters,
who in so short a time have been left to: mourn. Rev. Mr. Opie, of Montague, conducted the service at the Methodist cemetery at Lower Montague. After the neighbors and friends had performed the last sad duties at the grave, Geo. B. Aitken, Esq., called on those present to adjourn to the Hall in the vicinity, for the purpose of | organizing to assist the widow in completing | the planting that had been so sadly inter- rupted; and arrangements were subse- quently made for that purpose. Mrs. Meg- | gatt and her daughters, who have no rela- | tives in this Province, have the sincere, sympathy of all the people of Muitague, to | which we respectfully add the condolence

appeared an article on football signed by | “Spectator” who wastes almost a quarter of a column of your valuable paper in en- deavoring to show the public, and more! particularly footballists, his ignorance of | the game. D ves Mr. Spectator understand plain English, or is he ignorant of that | also? Did he not see that in my quoting
of that sentence it was to show the condi-
tional use of “should” which, I think, was
very fairly explained. Was I wrong when
I asserted that the P. W. C. team rushed
the bali to centre-field? Was it not by
a vigorous scrimmage that the ball was ex-
posed for the F. W. U. quarter, who quick- | ly passed to the half-back, thus enabling | him to carry the leather to centre field?) Nor did the forwards loiter at their goal- | line while this was being done; but quickly
followed up.
Here, again, ‘Spectator’ becomesterribly mixed. Qh, how hazy are this fellow’s ideas of football! or were his eyes serving him weil? Perhaps that run was too much for his organs of sight. At all events, did he not know that when the ball was secured from the scrimmage and kicked, or rather dribbled, down over the goal line by the P. W. C., that they had seventy-five yards of the field to their backs, the scrimmage having taken place at the twenty-five of their opponents’ territory. Now who ever heard of a captain ordering not to pass at their opponents’ twenty-five, or of kicking uuder similar circumstances, as the P. W. C. did. None, I would venture to say,
except ‘*Spectator.” . Further, ‘* Old Rugby” never said the ball was ** kicked into touch and there touched down,” which the “‘Spectator” accuses him of saying. Does “Spectator” net know the ball is dead when in touch? Does he not know that it is only behind the goal line, and not inside the touch line, that the ball can be touched down. In conclusion, I would strongly advise ‘‘Spectator” to frrnish him- self with the necessary football apparel and repair to the Campus Martius as often as possible in order that he might learn some of the fine points of that noble game before again attempting to dictate concorning it through the press.

Damace By LiguTninc.—On Thursday afternoon lightning visited the farm of Major Tucker, on the Sand Cove Road, about three miles from St. John, and did considerable damage. About three o’clock, says the Telegraph, the farm hand was en- gaged at work about 100 yards from the barn, when he heard a crash, and looking up, saw thet the lightning had struck and ripped open the roof of the building which had also taken fire. He immediately rushed to the barn and found that of the major’s herd of six registered Jersey cattle, five had been killed out- right, and one paralyzed by the shock. The cattle, five cows and a bull had shortly before been driven in and fastened in the barn. The lightning appears to have scorched the face of the first animal—a fine cow heavy with calf—and then ran round in a half circle killing the others of the herd. The cattle were all lying on their sides, facing in one direction, and had apparently been killed instantly. The man at once, in some way which 4 cannot now explain, rolled the injured cow out of the barn, and it is hoped that she will be saved. There were two
