(A. P. By Guardian's Special Wire) NEW YORK. Mey l5—Slocks go "Bistered slow recovery in quiet trading today, as markets took on a brighter tone following a pro- longed decline.

A cautious attitude remained in evidence. While the shore market crept forward, continuing the abrupt tum upward in late trading of the preceding session, volume on‘ the New York Stock Exchange dropped to 892,720 shares, the smallest since May 4.

Liquidation dried up but traders, big and little, felt more comfort- able on the sldelinm pending s clearer view of business ,.

and effects of federal control of

the exchange.

Stocks got fair support from commodities, for grains, cotton, rubber and other actively traded staples scored moderate gains. Vlfileat closed more than s. cent e bushel higher, and cotton up 35 to 45 cents a bale. Bond; participated in the quiet recovery movement while foreign exchanges held to a narrow course.

Net gains of fractions to s point or more were recorded for such ac- tive issues as American Telephone. U. S. Steel Common, Santa Fe, New York Central, Consolidated Gas, °° Chrysler, General Motors, J. I. Case and General Electric. The price sv- erage of 90 stocks closed 1.5 points higher at 76.5, the best gain in n week.

American Can, which finished s point lower, was outstanding among the few issues which went counter to the main movement. Speculative buying was attracted to Armour of Illinois shards on fresh rumors the new recapitalization plan was about completed, the preferred spurting for s. gain of more than 4 points. Hesitsncy of traders in follow- ing the rally was ascribed in part to uncertainty over outcome of the American Telephone dz Telegraph dividend meeting tomorrow. Am- erican Telephone extended its re- covery more than s point but re- acted to lose most of the gain be- fore the finish.

Action of the market itself, rath- er than outside news, furnished trading cues. Resistance offered to selling in the preceding ’ , particularly by the rslls, encour- aged further short-covering and a little timid buying.

The day's trade news afforded scant encouragement for the im- mediate future. Steel scrap prices continued to weaken,‘ which was accepted ss foreshadowing s. let- down in steel operations, and com- plaints were heard of slackening tendencies in some other lines. Optimistic market commentators argued the market, on lia decline since April 20, had discounted ses- sonsl recession in business ss well as federal stock exchange control. But even staunch bulls conceded the market was badly in need of n stimulan and looked hopefully to- ward Washington.

Heavy Rainfall In Nova Scotia

GUYBBORO, N. 5., May 14. — Wonkmen were employed today on the highways of Guysboro and Anti- gonish counties, repairing damages caused by washouts and landslides. Landslides occurred at Stillwater and in Guysboro town following the heavy week-end rainfall. Washouts were reported all along the high- ways. The rain, starting late Satur- day, poured down steadily all that night and Sunday, and caused streams to overflow their banks. Byron Scott's home here narrowly escaped a landslide that crashed down into his backyard, leveling his barn to the ground.
