‘*'They were very much delighted with the soil and sward of Prince Edward Island, with its productiveness, climate, etc. ' The rotation of crops, and their relation to each other—specially the want of sufficient root crops and other matters require revision. Moreover, the products of the field should be fed to stock instead of being exported. They thought well of the horses and sheep of the Island, but thought the cattle might be greatly improved, [f sheep farming is extended, an industry to which the Island is well adapted, they would recommend the introduction of Shropshires, of the Down variety. They grow large, yield a liberal supply of woul, and their flesh is of good flavor. The Shorthorn is the Pro- fessor’s favorite stock, as well for milk as for flesh. He is not insensible to the quality of the beef of the Herefords, and to their thrifty character, but ,he believes

Within the last two years ten marriages have been performed in the United States by telegraph. Says the Methodist :—** A serious doubt exists whether such mar- riages are legal. The parties were in every case in different States and the jaws of beth have to be complied with, The wit- nesses saw but half of the marriage (if they saw any of it), as only one of the par- ties was in their presence. No person with a particle of sound sense would engage in such a farce since if is not probable that any court would declare such a marriage to be legal. It is wicked trifling with the in- terests of possible children.

power, the condition of the country was so changed in the estimation of the capitalists of the world that arrangements had been made upon terms which would secure the construction of the Pacific Railway. The policy of the Government had from the outset been that the land of the North West should pay for the construction of the railway; that would be fulfilled, and by using the credit of the Governinent for raising some of the money needed, and by a comparatively moderate portien of land, the construction of the railway within ten years had been secured, and secured upon terms which, at no distant day, would relieve the people of Canada of any charge, any debt in connection with that great work. (Applause. )

A cass of considerable interest to news- paper subscribere came up at the recent Division Court held at Welland. The Telegraph sued a subscriber for arrears. Defendant claimed that he had paid the former publisher $1 in 1874, after which ‘he did not subscribe. He afterwards moved ‘his residence and for over two years had lnot had it. The Judge ruled that he was ‘liable for the whole amount, and gave | judgment aecordingly, the defendant hav- ‘ing acknowledged being a subscriber by ‘taking part of the papers out of the post ‘oftice. His Honor said the law was very | distinet on this peint.

Tue shipments of cattle from Montreal during the week ending Saturday, amounts to 1,332 head, which shows a falling off of 226 cattle as compared with the previous week. The shipments of sheep are 2,005 head against 1,185 last week.

Tue tonnage of -English sailing vessels has decreased by about 500,000 tons since 1870, but steam tonnage has increased by about 1,400,600 tons.
