1. Three notrump. Since we have an opening bid facing an opening bid a game Contract must be reached. The tact that partner identified a minimum type of opening bid by signing off with one nou‘ump does not change the obligation to under- take a game contract.

The only possible question is whether four hearts may not turn out to be a better contract than three notrucmp. This might be reached by jumping to three hearts instead of three notrump. But since partner’s hand appears to be balanced, and ours is also, and since we provide supporting honors in every suit, the likeli- hood is that notrump will work but best.

2. Pass. There is practically no chance of making a game in yi‘ew of partner’s weakness rabid. At most he can have 15 points. but more usually he will have 13 or 14 points. We therefore lack the combined total of 26 points re-

3. Three diamonds. Again we can be sure there a game some where, but this time it is uncer- tain whether the best contract is hearts, diamonds, or notrump. By jumping at three diamonds. a forcing bid, partner _is given the opporunity to indicate which game contract he thinks has the best chance to make.

Whatever his decision is, we abide by it. If partner bids three notrumIp, that becomes the final contract. If, over three diamonds, he shows belated support for our suit by bidding three hearts, we bid Eour hearts. And similarly, if partner bids four diamonds, we raise to live.

4. Three clubs. Game is sure, and a slam is possible. The im- portant thing is that the club suit: should be shownuPavrtJner‘s rabid will help guide us to the best contract. If he bids three no trump, that becomes the resting place.

But if partner bids either three hearts or four clubs, slam possi- bilities should be investigated further. This can be done by nam- ing spades, ,a bid which shows spade control as well as interest in a slam. The final contract will then depend on whether partner cooperates with the slam effort. Townsllend, Suffragan Bishop of London, Ont, said Tuesday. Addressing the annual meeting of the executive council and de- partuients of the General Synod of the Anglican Church of Can- ada, he told 114 delegates: “Provision must be made for our missionaries to live in decent houses. Bishops find clergymen for mission churches but say they cannot putthem in the houses which now exist.
