Civil Service Makes Plea For Farnners

OTTAWA. (CF)-G. W. gomery (PC-Victoria Carleton made a plea in the Commons Tuesday night for a better fed- eral deal for Canada's farmers. especially the 27,000 farmers of his province of New Brunsivick.

The farmers. he said during the budget debate. have been the chief contributors in the flatten- ing out of the cost of living be- cause of lower food prices.

As a group they worked longer hours. got less returns and en- joyed lcss privileges than any other working group in the coun- try.

They should have got a heifer deal from Finance Minister Ab- bott in his budget and should he glvcn "top priority" in national and international planning.

OTTAWA. (O?) -The Federal

Government has decided to buyl 10,000,000 pounds of dried skim milk from the Canadian industry in an effort to reduce a commer- cial stockpile that has doubled in the space of a year. Agriculture officials disclosed Tuesday that with Canada's con- centrated milk lndustry facing a problem in mounting surplus pro- duction, federal relief will be pro- vided thi-oug' government purch- ase of about 50,000 barrels of the surplus product. Purchases will be- gin just as soon as storage space can be found.

Big outlets are Latin-American and Asiatic countries. but the feel- ing here is that many of thus countries are taking only meagre supplies, waiting for a possible move by the U. S. to dump sur- pluses at fire-sale prices as it did some years ago.

The two children, acconipanidf by Brendon Ma.cAulay, age flve,l and Donna. MacAulay, age t.hree,l walked to the pond, about one quarter of a mile from their home.

Arriving at the pond, the chil- dren went out on the ice to play. The accident occurred where men had been cutting ice a few days ago. There was a. very thin coat- ing of ice over the spot.

The MacAulay children rushed! to the home of their grandmolhenl Mrs. Donald MacAulay, who lives: I short distance from the pond; Mrs. MacAulay immediately called the children's father, Mr. Stewart MocAulay, who in turn notified the R.C.M-.P. The bodies were re- covered about an hour after the accident.

The parents could not under- stand how the children had stray- ed so far from home. as they have been in the habit of doing most of their playing in the nearby fields.

Dr. Robert A. Burden. st. Pet- er's, the coroner. decided an in- quest was not necessary.

Catherine Praught is survived by her father and mother. also six slsrtera, Anna, 17; Margaret, 16'. Madeleine, 15; Frances. 14; Gert- rude, seven; and Marie. one year old. Mr. Praught is a. carpenter.

Leonard Mavlonald is survived by his father and mother, and one sister, Bernadette, one year old. Mr. MacDonald is e fisherman. captain of the draggcr Marjorie Marybollo. .

The funerals will be held Thurs- day morning from st. Mcar'y's Ohurch.
