By JOHN BARBOUR NEW YORK (AP) — He was] a shy, slew man, in his youth a slow reader and often a mediocre pupil. Even at Cambridge Uni- versity, where he studied for the clergy, he was hardly ranked a man likely to make history.
His name was Charles Darwin, and a century ago he lit the literary fuse to a revolution which appeared to challenge scriptural interpretation of man’s place on earth — seemed, in fact, to re- duce humanity to a- mere cosmic accident.
The revolution was implicit in Darwin's theory of evolution and the ‘scientific mechanism by which it worked — natural se- lection and the survival of the fittest.
Although Darwin first clearly conceived his theory at the age of 30, he cautiously sat on it for 20 years, not unaware of its ex plosive potential. Only when he learned that. another brilliant scientist, Alfred Russell Wallace, -was about to publish a theory similar to his own did Darwin scramble into print.
And so he burst Upon history, aged 50 — late for any genius to bloom. The book was The Origin of the Species and tite

Capt. Chris Thurlow said he | was confident the ship could make the crossing. He offered the men a bonus to make the trip. He said the vessel would undergo en- gine repairs in England because necessary shipyard facilities were not available here.
The captain hoped to make the crossing with a full crew. When the group left the ship Sunday he refused to comment and ordered reporters off the vessel after say- ing:
“We have enough men to make the trip.”
. Capt. Marten Rysyk of the Gele Zee estimates the crossing in 25 days “barring bad weather.”’ He said he has enough fuel and pro- visions aboard for 40 days at sea.
“We expect no trouble,” said the white-haired captain, a vet- eran of 50 years at sea.
