Not even the noteworthy fact tha' the Leader of the House of Commons— SirWil- frid Laurier—-bas relegated the adj urned debate on Prohibition to the forty- third (!) position on the order paper has drawn from tbe Guardian awerd of protest. What are we to infer? The Montreal Star--when commenting upon the dis- cussion in Parliament, declared that. “a tone of flagrant irsincerity’ pervaded the whole delate ;” thatthe whole thing was a farce gotup to humbug the temperance voters, and tbe woral is that until the tem perance organ zations take their case seriously they cannot expect the party positicians to doco.” Are we to conclude that tLe Guardian has euddenly diecover- ed that there was no fun io the farce ? aod that the proper course for temperance voters to pureue is, first of al!, to demon- strate ileir sincerity by ‘‘voting down” the *‘deceivers” and “traitors” —we use Mr Duncan Marshall’s words—who nul'ified the plebiscite and gave Charlottetown -a license law? We should be glad of an explacation on the pait of the Guardian.

HEAVY EXPENDITURES

THe war with Spein, and incidental expenditures, entailed a very heavy burden of cost upon the people of the United States. In the past two years and nine months the payment of the United States Government aggregated the enor-~ mous total of $1,416,765,277.34. Of this great sum $593,285,101.64 have gone for the army and navy, ($26,000,600 for the Philippine indemnity, $393,766 227.35 for pensions, and $1@8,906,835 66 for iu terest, an aggregate outlay of $1,115,957,- 264.66 for old and new wars inthe short epace of two years and nine months.
