Slit ﬂour three times with bak- ing powder and salt. Cream butter or shortening gradually blend in sugar, beating alter each addition. Add dry ingredients to sugar m];- ture alternately with milk, combin- ing after each addition. Beat egg whites until stiff but not dry and fold into batter with vanilla, lightly but thoroughly.
