Steve Stevens’ Atomic Play- boys WEA Music, 1989

In this, the day of speed metal and fast & flashy rock: ’n’ roll, truly amazing guitarists are becoming commonplace. It is not surprising, therefore, that so many hot young musicians, as well as many of the not-so-young ones, are names that mean noth- ing to the record-buying public. With his band’s debut album, Steve Stevens, the speed-burner who backed Billy Idol, attempts to bring his name out of the ranks of anonymity. It is a very good bet that his attempt will prove to be successful.

The word that comes to mind with “Steve Stevens’ Atomic Playboys” is diversity; Stevens proves that he is much more di- verse an artist than his years with Idol gave him credit for

(Idol himself,*in fact, wasn’t a terribly good example of diver- sity). The title track is the type of raw, scorching rock that one who has some familiarity with Stevens would expect. “Atomic Playboys” is also a good exam- ple of the powerful presence of the band’s vocalist, Perry Mc Carthy; McCarthy’s energetic vo

“Power of Suggestion”; after be- ing given a taste in the opening track of what may be to come, the brass section and the backup singers seem rather out of place. If the listener considers this to be diversity gone wrong on Stevens’ part, I would probably agree; this, I feel, is one of the weak spots on the album. The Atomic Playboys, however, show enough initiative to avoid being perma- nently stuck in the same genre of music. An example of diversity in a better light is the album’s instrumental showpiece, “Sands”, one of the hottest pieces of gui- tar work that the listener will ever encounter. Here, the hard- rock guitarist shows that the ac- coustic guitar will always have a place in music, as will the well- written rock ballad like “Desper- ate Heart”. There is even an instance of rather tame thrash

Being one of the most un- derrated guitarists in the busi- ness, one of the biggest problems that Steve Stevens will encounter is that of comparison. Listeners may compare McCarthy’s vocals on “Crackdown” to that of a tame

Ian Astbury. Likewise, “Pet the Hot Kitty” could be comparable to something written by a young Aerosmith (that isn’t to say that Steve Tyler et. al. have to be young to write dirty songs). I must confess that I.made.compar- isons like these myself. “Sands”, on the other hand, is incompara- ble to virtually anything; it seems to suggest that it’s time that Steve Stevens (and the rest of his band, for that matter) was rec- ognized, not as Billy Idol’s for- mer back-up man, not as some- one who has a style like someone else, but as Steve Stevens, a com- petent musician in his own right, who no longer needs such com-
