By Friday, 81 were safely out but as rescuers dug through the debris they found body after body until by late Wednesday 26 had been brought to tl‘ surface.

It wasn’t until Wednesday that they were able to reach the 13.000-foot level where about 55 miners were believed imprisoned. Other miners had been working at 13,400 and 13,800 feet when the bum-D occurred.

There was some confusion among reports of exactly how the 12 trapped men were discovered.

Wood said he uncovered the air hose which led to the discovery of the 12 men.

When word of the survivors reached the surface there were only a few people around the pit- head. Within minutes hundreds converged on the scene, laughing, crying and shouting in a bedl-am of 'joy. ‘ ‘

“SECOND ~ MIRACLE”

“It‘s our second miracle,” said Mayor Ralph Gilroy. “'Ilhe Lord has been good to us. I can’t find words to express what is inside me at this moment. I have a feel- ing there‘s a bigger and better Spl‘inghill aread."

The “first miracle" was the rescue of 88 men from neighbor- ing No. 4 colliery, since sealed, two years ago after an explosion trapped them. They, too, had been given up for lost. ‘

On that occasion it was two days and three nights before res- cue workers reached the trapped men and brought them out. ALL THE MORE AMAZING

This time the survival was all the more amazing because the men had been underground for almost six full .days before tire- less crews broke through.
